Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I reviewed for her upcoming chemistry final next Wednesday. We focused primarily on properties of matter, substances vs. mixtures, homogeneous vs. heterogeneous mixtures, and chemical vs. physical changes in matter. This is material from earlier in her course, before I started tutoring her, that she didn't do well on and felt she could use extra review. After some explanation she was more comfortable answering questions on this chapter from her textbook and offering her reasoning for why she chose her answers. We also reviewed ionic vs. covalent bonds, and their corresponding terminology. Following this we did some more practice with molar mass conversions, including the new concept of molar volume and Avogadro's hypothesis for gases. The student seems to be very comfortable now with this type of problem."
"We focused on areas where the student said her knowledge was weak, particularly significant figures, intermolecular forces, electron shielding, electronegativity, and finding empirical and molecular formulae. After each topic, she said that she understood the material better, and she was able to solve some problems that she didn't previously know how to solve."
"Today I reviewed valence shell electron pair repulsion theory with the student and how it relates to predicting geometrical shape of molecules. We also reviewed naming binary compounds including Type I, Type II, and Type III systems for naming. We also reviewed naming of polyatomic molecules and assigning charges to the compounds."
