Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We started today by going over general information about the test, specifically the section types, amount of time per section, how it's scored, etc. We used this information to identify when and how to guess. After discussing general strategies, we went over each section and the types of questions he can expect to see. I had him complete some practice problems from each to get used to the time available per question. We also discussed section-specific strategies. He knows to generate his own answer choices whenever possible before looking at the ones given on the reading and verbal section. He also knows which question types to skip and return to on the quantitative section. We spent the rest of our time going over math concepts covered on the test. He needed some review on converting between fractions and decimals as well as some area formulas. We introduced geometric and arithmetic sequences and completed practice problems. He had a good understanding of exponent rules, absolute value, and probability. We will continue to identify math concepts to review in future meetings. He is to complete a practice quantitative section before we next meet. Excellent work!"
"The student and I focused on more advanced math questions, including algebra word problems, advanced arithmetic, and geometry. We also went over analogy questions. I gave her work for next week."
"Today, we began looking at the pages of suffixes, prefixes, and root words in the test prep book. We did most of our work on the first practice test. Synonyms and analogies: He studies Spanish, and this helped him on a few occasions identifying root words. The analogies came much easier for him. He is getting the hang of creating sentences with the stem words. I gave him a handout of typical relationships used in the analogy section. He should use this when he does him homework. Reading Comp: We reviewed strategies and then practiced on reading passages from the test. He was able to get most of the answers; the jotting down of type of passage, main idea, tone, and mapping helped. We spent some time on math. We worked our way through the questions on Section one of the practice test. Homework: complete practice test # 1 in the test prep book."
