Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed Sentence Completion and Numbers & Operations and began covering Geometry. In regards to Sentence Completion, it is my belief that the student has mastered both basic and intermediary strategies to maximize her performance for this part of the Critical Reading section so I have asked her to focus on more advanced strategies moving forward. She also did quite well in the Numbers & Operations so I suggested that, when reviewing for the exam, she should focus on only those problems from the N&O packet that she struggled with. She was also mostly successful with the problems in the geometry packet so I asked her to go through and do all the problems that she knows how to do, while saving all the ones that she is unfamiliar with for the next session."
"I wrote three different essay prompts for the student and I to work on, tailored to his interests. He did well."
"Started by going over the student's most recent independent practice with the English section, on which she scored a 33. Her target score is a bit higher, though based on pre-assessment data and my observations in session, I would say we've already seen considerable progress in a relatively short amount of time. Student would do best to keep her current approach and take the section one question at a time, applying prior knowledge and logic abilities while minimizing second-guessing. Went on to review the expectations for the Writing section and how to maximize one's content score on the essay. She has solid comprehension of the basic persuasive essay format, and was able to put into practice the grammar skills exercised in the English section. If there are issues, they will be found in time management during the planning and composition phases. Assertiveness (and again, avoiding second-guessing herself) in choosing evidence for her arguments and how to phrase sentences will be her biggest ally. Created a purpose-built outline in response to a sample ACT prompt, and began converting it to prose before adjourning until 9/6. Will finish Writing practice then, followed by a general recap of specific question types."
