"I did a vocabulary assessment with the student, and we went over his homework. His vocabulary is excellent. I assigned SSAT geometry for homework."
"This was our first session so I took a few minutes to get to know the student. I assured him that by the end of our sessions, he will have the skills, strategies, and confidence to score well. We discussed gamesmanship and its role in attacking the questions. We looked at the structure of the test and basic strategies; then we turned to vocabulary. I talked about mnemonics and how they can help push a newly-learned word into long-term memory. Vocab score is hard to drive, but if he focuses on a few words a day, he will increase his vocab. Then we took this knowledge to the synonym sections. His study of Spanish helped identifying root words within words. Even if he didn't know a word, he could sometimes remember hearing it and label it positive or negative, and then do the same for the answer choices. The student already uses process of elimination, and this helped a great deal. From the synonyms, we moved to the analogies. He learned how to create sentences for the words and then parallel those sentences to the answer choices. We also looked at the types of relationships between words that are the most common. I will bring him a list for our next session so he has it as he practices. We moved to the critical reading sections, and he took copious notes on what to do before, during, and after reading. Then he practiced on a short reading passage...and got most of the answers correctly. We spent our remaining time looking at the math sections and how to eliminate answers before any calculations are done, thus reducing the amount of math necessary. I suggested he get one more practice book, and I will send his father the information. Homework: finish the first practice test in the study guide, and work on vocab. flashcards."
"The student and I reviewed some math practice. She clearly understands many of the concepts that were completely new to her at the beginning of our sessions."
