Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We spent the entire session working on outlining world studies. First, we looked at the bold headings in his textbook. I asked the student to define "consolidation" and "unification", and when he couldn't I gave an example of each. He could then define the terms. Next, we browsed and discussed the picture, maps, and their captions to gain a sense of what we would be reading. We each read paragraph by paragraph silently and then he pinpointed the main idea of each, or we discussed the main idea if he wasn't sure. Lastly, the student paraphrased the main idea into a single point or sentence, on his outline. The student is improving."
"The student and I focused on reading comprehension, how to retain information, and studying skills. We also did some brief work on how to improve her vocabulary. She was, as always, attentive and focused."
"This session was spent on preparing the student for an in-class debate. Much of the hour was spent finding sources and interpreting them. I was helpful in getting the student to move beyond her own perspective and see the information and sources in the context of the time so that she could see how something that she might interpret one way could have been interpreted another way in that era. We agreed to meet on Friday briefly. We will then go over the paper and focus on improvements."
