Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over derivatives at a point (by the two different limit definitions of a derivative), as well as looking at derivatives as a continuous function. Did some introductory work with the Power Rule as well. The student appears to be understanding the material very well; I don't have any concerns about him with respect to learning this material."
"The student reviewed addition, subtraction, and multiplication with decimals. She is proficient in addition and multiplication problems, but needs some additional practice with subtraction. She also worked on a pre-algebra brain teaser. Again, she showed her refined skills in addition, multiplication, and even division."
"Great first session! We reviewed the many types of limits, including discontinuities and asymptotes, and I gave him tips on trigonometry."
"The student covered his algebra homework today. He seems to have a good grasp of the material, and he had finished his other homework, so he just went through the math and it only took about an hour. He definitely understands the material. He said he felt good about the reading tests he had had."
"I covered initial value problems (IVP) and general solutions to differential equations (DE). The student was struggling with how to apply the correct Integration method to solve the DE problem. The student was very positive and enthusiastic about process of evaluating the DEs. Additional practice will be needed frequently to consolidate the concepts taught. The student is interested in having more problems solved in future sessions."
"Today was our first session, so I got to meet with the student for the first time. We were able to work on some relevant topics using online resources. She is a very bright girl with lots of personality! She is quick to pick up new topics and very vocal about what does or doesn't make sense to her, as well as making suggestions as to what would help her understand better. She knows her learning style well, which is excellent! We reviewed some topics that she had already covered; specifically, factoring polynomials and quadratic equations, solving systems of linear equations by graphing, and solving absolute value equations. Most of these were easy for her, and if she was rusty on something, she only required a quick reminder from me before she was able to solve the problems with ease. I then introduced a topic that was completely new to her: sine, cosine, and tangent. She was able to grasp the new concept very quickly and solved right triangle problems with ease. We then briefly discussed her goals for the year. The big one: get an A! She wants a good grade so she will be eligible for honors and AP classes next year. Her biggest challenge is test taking anxiety, and she explained how she gets nervous during exams and makes little mistakes. I think it will be important for us to work on test taking strategies in order to help her reach her goal of getting a good grade. She also told me she struggles with word problems and geometry. As such, we will have to put an emphasis on problems solving strategies when we come to problems such as these. All in all, a very productive session. Looking forward to our future work together!"
