"We started today by going over the student's essay from his first practice test, which his mother sent to me over the weekend. I pointed out some areas where the flow and word choice could be improved, and suggested that he avoid phrases like "I believe this because" in favor of simply stating the evidence. I also encouraged him to break down long complex sentences into a couple shorter sentences to improve the flow of the argument, as well as make the paragraph longer since most of his were only 3-4 sentences. After that, we worked on the Quadratic Equations practice test. I reminded him of the quadratic equation and how to use it, as well as how to factor equations to find solutions. With that knowledge he was able to solve the problems on his own, which was encouraging. I'll be sending him more math practice work, and I've instructed him to not just take the practice test and walk away, but to look at what he got wrong and try to use the explanations provided to teach himself how to do it and then try some flashcards to see if he understands it."
"We went over general ACT strategies and then finished one full English section and carefully reviewed all of her errors and everything she wasn't 100% sure of. We started the math section, too. For homework the student will complete another English section and buy the official ACT book."
"After I learned about the student's experience so far preparing for the ACT, she and I started by working on practice questions from the ACT's math section. She said that she thought she had the most trouble with word problems. She did well on most of the problems in the first part of the math section; however, she had some trouble setting up equations and proportions for certain scenarios, and we worked on this. She made good use of her calculator to plug in answer choices for problems she did not know how to do, but she could work on not relying on her calculator so much for evaluating simple expressions, especially when the answer choices are in exact form. During the second half of the session, the student and I worked on passages from the science section. She completed the passages well within the time limit. However, she struggled with the second passage and with drawing conclusions from the experiments it described. To practice, she will work on a practice science section from her ACT book while timing herself. She will also complete a math diagnostic test on the website to pinpoint the areas in math where she needs the most work."
