Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This afternoon, I worked with the student on a history assignment. The assignment was essentially to read a chapter of the text and to summarize key points in response to specific prompts. The student has a fairly good grasp of the material as a whole."
"The student and I discussed different ways to study his course material over spring break. I tried to encourage him to divide his study time evenly over the week, instead of trying to study for hours on one or two days. He has received an A in his last statistics test, and is expecting a high B or A in his last finite math exam. We also talked about getting started with correspondences for his business management course - it is important that he does not leave this to the last minute, and gives his professional correspondents a decent amount of time to return emails in order for him to write his reflection report without being pushed for time."
"Tonight's session focused on completion of upcoming Spanish assignments. The student has a mid-term exam on Tuesday, that includes dialogue with her teacher. She had finalized the autobiographical paragraph and translated it but acknowledged 'feeling a bit weak' on dialogue and pronunciation. My recommendation, in addition to her planned studying Sunday evening, was that we plan on her speaking in Spanish to me in our next session (I am semi-fluent in Spanish). She agreed. It seems clear to me that she is realizing her need for additional effort and study time. Hopefully, using our tutoring session can help her take responsibility for establishing that practice in this class (which she hasn't had to do until recently since this subject came easy to her). She also needed to complete a 'daylight photo shoot' to enhance her autobiography for Spanish. She began that when we finished tonight's session. Her study plan included watching movies in Spanish (with English subtitles) to help her adopt the natural rhythm of the language. I thought that a clever idea. We projected a minimum of 2 to 3 hours of study time for the above tasks."
"Today was my last tutoring session with the student. I had him complete a 1st grade math worksheet - he finished it with ease in about a minute. Then, I had him complete a 2nd grade math worksheet. Although it was a little more challenging, he seemed confident and was able to complete the worksheet. He kept saying, "I feel really good about this right now!" We also worked on writing a story about the first day of school. Finally, we read a story about piranhas. I'm very impressed with his progress and I believe that he will succeed in second grade. His math skills are beyond his grade level, and he is a strong reader. The challenge will be setting up good habits for homework completion and rewarding good behavior. I wish him the best of luck with the upcoming school year!"
"The only thing we need to do is finish a summer reading book, "Amelia Bedelia Helps Out," and write a summary. The student currently has my copy of the book so he could do some reading by himself."
"The student and I had a wonderful session today! We began with reading and responding to a story; we focused on understanding author's purpose, identifying the setting, and the main idea. Also, we extended the story to ourselves and wrote a written response to the text. He did a wonderful job answering critical thinking questions as well as writing sentences to summarize the story. During this session we reviewed second grade sight words, practice decoding and spelling skills. He is a fluent level G reader and next session we can work on level H. I am so proud of his hard work and it truly is a pleasure to work with him."
