Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by William in Monterey Park, CA
This was my second meeting with the student. She was in very good spirits during our session. As we were playing catch up with missed work, we decided to prioritize the assignments that would be due on Monday. We completed an English assignment which entailed creating original sentences for twenty vocabulary words and two additional exercises that required passive recognition of these words. Several words were new to her, and those we discussed in a "real world" context using anecdotes which later became prompts for review. I checked her exercises and she had answered all correctly! The other assignment we completed was for psychology. She was to find an article online from a source that she considered reliable on the topic of child development. She had chosen her article, so together we read and discussed it and then brainstormed to generate five original questions. The point of the assignment was to demonstrate comprehension of the subject and the ability to reflect on the article in greater depth. I was very impressed with the quality of the questions she invented. She demonstrated a high level of critical thinking and would not settle for any question that required only a "yes-no" response. I think we accomplished a great deal this afternoon, especially considered that she had been feeling less energetic than usual. When I left, she still had some math homework but felt she could manage this assignment independently. We confirmed our next meeting for Monday afternoon.

For this session, we focused on writing the outline for the student's assessment essay. The topic is to compare and contrast US and Italian governments. We created an outline template and a Venn diagram, and then moved the information from the diagram into the outline. She will begin the draft this week.

This afternoon, I worked with both of the girls. We focused on preparing for a history test. I reintroduced techniques used to study for their U.S. geo test and each girl was scoring nearly 100% on their Canadian geo by the end of the session.

The student continued on his summer packet. He completed spelling, definitions and reading comprehension. He's doing very well in everything. We focused on more tongue twisters to work on his pronunciation and annunciation.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Benjamin in Monterey Park, CA
Student H and I started by discussing characters, character traits and personalities. We used examples from Star Wars, Thomas the Tank Engine, and Sponge Bob. Then, we read a book about an imaginative, but reclusive boy. We filled out a character trait chart to describe the boy. Student H struggled at first, but eventually warmed up to the idea that characters can be described by their personalities. Student A and I started with a book that focused on the -ai- sound, but she seemed to struggle with it. We did some sorting with (-ai-, long a/silent e) and (short-a) words to get her to make that phonemic connection, and she did better than she did with the book. I think the repetition really helps. We finished with some go-fish.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Endia in Monterey Park, CA
The student began the session by reading a fiction and nonfiction book to me. We discussed his favorite subjects in school and his strengths and weaknesses. After reading, I discussed some of the things that I noticed he needs to work on to improve fluency in reading. We talked about reviewing 1st grade sight words and introducing the 2nd grade sight word list. I also noticed he needed to work on words with multiple syllables and strategies to help him decode words on his own. We looked at his homework for the week. We also discussed how homework would be one area that he works on during our sessions, as well as strategies in reading and math.
