Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I have been focusing on ways to improve her math skills and strategies to reduce difficult calculations in problems. She seems to be taking to these strategies well, and I think she is quite encouraged by the results. We covered enthalpy of reactions, volume-pressure work, and heat exchange problems with and without phase changes. I continue to encourage her practicing math problems so she can approach the exams with greater confidence knowing that she will be able to move through the exam questions quickly and without hesitation."
"Today, the student asked to review questions on his previous exams and quizzes. We specifically reviewed scientific notation, conversion problems, physical vs. chemical changes and properties, significant figures, and word problems. We discussed noteworthy scientists and their contributions to atomic theory. He felt significant figures were easy, but we will continue to focus on conversions and word problems. He also mentioned that he felt his test went well and that he "knew everything" on the exam. I will write out another worksheet for him to work on in the next couple of days that will include word problems and examples of physical vs. chemical changes and properties."
"The student has an unit test tomorrow so we went over material for that. We went over, specifically, net ionic equations and assigning oxidation numbers. I left her with a little extra practice to go over for her test tomorrow."
"This session was spent going through the student's review packet for his coming comp exam. The major topic covered today was unit tracking as it applies to limiting reagent and percent yield problems. This is one of the two hard concepts in introduction to chemistry. Tomorrow we will cover equilibria and any other thermodynamic or kinetics topics they covered, along with finishing the review packet."
"Today, the student did a great job! We went over several different types of algebraic manipulations using expressions, word problems, graphing lines, the distance formula, and more. We did a lot of practice problems and the student improved within the session. She is great at picking up concepts. Awesome job today."
"We went over a practice exam for chemistry for the majority of the session. Topics covered included Lewis electron dot diagrams (in depth), acid and base chemistry, conversion from volume of a gas to moles, and periodic trends."
