Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I went over her genetics lectures, including DNA replication, transcription, and translation. We found some animations on YouTube of the processes that I suggested she re-watch on mute and try to narrate. She is also making a vocab list and studying blank copies of the diagrams her teacher gave them in class."
"For this session, we mainly covered the chapter section involving gene expression through protein synthesis. We took proper notes on the process of translation while defining certain elements pertinent to translation. We discussed the importance of gene expression to the central dogma of biology."
"The student and I covered photosynthesis. We reviewed an in-class quiz and discussed the light and dark reactions and their respective roles in photosynthesis. We completed a practice test and a worksheet, then covered some book questions. The student continues to improve at a steady rate!"
"We covered invertebrates and how they are classified. We talked about what the evolutionary tree means, and then covered characteristics of invertebrates. We then reviewed the student's test. What we found is that most of the questions that he got wrong were because he was unsure what some of the terms meant. In order to fix that, I recommended that he make flash cards to help him study. What that means is that he should go through his notes, and whenever he doesn't know what a term means, he should write down that vocabulary on a card, and write the definition on the back. When drilling, he should drill from both sides of the card. What I mean by that is that he should be able to give the vocabulary from the definition, and give a definition from a vocabulary term."
"Today the student and I went over the biology final exam study guide her teacher provided. We reviewed about half of the subjects in detail and briefly skimmed a few others. I plan to send her materials and tips every day this week, as well as additional study materials. Her exam is June 3rd, so we have one more session before then. Besides biology, she says she got an A+ on her latest math test (yay!), and is feeling confident about her other end of the year assignments."
"In this session, we covered chapters 31 and 32 in the student's biology textbook in preparation for her quiz. Chapter 31 focused on the nervous system and chapter 32 covered the muscular, skeletal, and integumentary (skin) systems. She demonstrated understanding of the basic anatomy of a neuron (cell body, dendrites, axon, myelin, and axon terminal). She was able to correctly identify the function of a ligament and tendon. She should review some of the newer terms: sympathetic/ parasympathetic system, ossification, osteoblasts, skeletal/ smooth/ cardiac muscle, myofibril, and acetylcholine."
