Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During today's session we covered English, math, and reading comprehension. We first had the student work on math word problems from the chapter I'd assigned him for homework. We then moved on to English rhetorical skills. He did quite well on most of the problems, and understands the relation of paragraphs now in passages. Finally, we worked on some difficult math problems. He had forgotten how to do logarithms, surface area, and graphs of circles, but once explained the concepts came back to him quickly. For homework I assigned him parts of the reading and science full tests at the back of his test prep book."
"We focused on ACT English strategies/practice. Her homework is to complete the English questions, read 10 pages of Austen, and read one article."
"After I learned more about the student's experience so far preparing for the ACT, he and I began by working on practice problems from the ACT's English section. He did a good job identifying most grammatical errors, but could continue to work on thinking about transition words and how they connect or contrast one part of a paragraph with another. He and I also practiced completing the questions for one English passage under time constraints. He was able to complete the problems in time. He should continue to time himself as he works on practice sections of the ACT. During the second half of the session, the student and I worked on the problems he had missed on the math diagnostic test he had taken. We covered solving inequalities with absolute value, finding surface area and volume of shapes, simplifying expressions, and finding equations for perpendicular lines. He would benefit from continuing to practice factoring and using FOIL to simplify expressions."
