Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed the SAT and ACT reading exams. We did practice exams for both and focused on concepts like speed reading and passage comprehension."
"Today we set goals for the student- we are aiming for around a 27 or 28, to maximize her chance of admission to her first choice school. We also are looking at the SAT to see if she feels more comfortable with the format of those questions, over the ACT. Today, we worked on English, Math and Reading to assess where the student stands currently. For English, she had a general sense of which answers were correct and which were wrong. She struggled a bit with punctuation rules, especially semicolon, colon and comma usage. We also discussed specificity in pronoun choice. I have noted this, and we will work on it next week with specific practice. In math, she was able to logic out the answers but sometimes had difficulty determining the correct approach to a problem. Overall, however, she has strong logic and a clear, broad mathematical foundation. In future sessions, we will focus on strategizing for problem-solving, and starting with the end in mind. In Reading, she proved to be a fast and strong reader. The only concern in this section was that, although she was usually able to narrow down her answer to the correct one and a distractor, she sometimes wavered on which to choose. I suggested some methods, such as reading the passage first, finding specific quotes to back up the answer, and keeping the main idea of the passage in mind, which should help her cross out the distractor in the future. We will practice these question types so that she can become comfortable with this approach. For homework, I assigned the rest of the ACT practice test we were working on, and I asked the student to look over and try a few sections of the SAT to see if she might prefer that format. If she favors the SAT, then I asked her to instead finish the SAT and put aside the ACT. I want to make sure that she commits to one test or the other by next week so we can focus our work more meaningfully. Overall, this was a very productive session, and I expect her score to improve significantly."
