Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today I met with the student and we worked on her prep for the ISEE. Continuing the theme from last week, I tried to come up with lessons that were enjoyable for her and that would keep her on task and learning new things. First, we reviewed the word list we have been building and she did a great job remembering the vocabulary words. I am really impressed with her knowledge of words at her age. It is obvious that she reads a lot. Next, we reviewed the homework problems from last time and talked a bit about what she has been doing in her math classes. This is always fun because she's excited to show me what she knows and by teaching me I can tell that she understands everything very well. After that, I tried to make math fun by incorporating the jelly beans and some loose change into a math review session on money and combinations of coins. She did a good job and enjoyed the jelly bean rewards. I'd like to start incorporating real practice test scenarios into our lessons coming up as testing day approaches."
"For this session, the student and I focused on new concepts in math -- we went over probability, sets, data analysis, etc. Along with that, we also reviewed the essay she wrote for homework. She made corrections. For homework, I provided her with new vocabulary words. She is going to work on a new math set as well as plan out a new essay topic within the next two weeks. She is great with grasping math."
"We went over the answers to a practice quantitative reasoning section from the prep book. The girls are doing much better in terms of reasoning and solving algebraic equations. We also reviewed common Greek and Latin roots, in particular their meanings. The girls asked for some extra help in solving word problems, which is where we focused most of our time. The girls are more comfortable setting up algebraic equations from the word problems. For their next session, I asked the girls to complete a practice reading comprehension section under timed conditions."
