Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Continued practicing and reviewing number operations and algebraic concepts. Learned new material on functions, data analysis, probability and statistics and applying concepts to math problems; also began to practice sentence completion and verbal questions."
"The student and I worked on some homework during this session and prepared for a quiz that he had in class on Monday. We got his work done and I feel as though he was comfortable with the material that he will be quizzed on."
"Worked with the student on long division, she seems to have a good grasp of the process, and will get faster as she goes. The other student and I worked on math, which was more proportions, and he seemed comfortable with that. Then we worked on a creative writing project. His story needed more of a plot though, so we talked about how he could incorporate more action. We also worked on a project on the Declaration of Independence that he was working on. "
"We worked on a practice test, discussing LCM, adding fractions, dividing fractions, multiplying by decimals/percentages, etc. We talked about various strategies and shortcuts for solving problems faster."
"The student and I worked on her screening exam for her new school. She worked on the problems she was familiar with first and I helped her as needed. On the ones she had no experience with, I explained the concepts to her and we completed them together. We researched as much as time allowed to understand these problems and solve them. She plans to continue to work on the test."
"Today we reviewed chapters 7-9 of Lord of the Flies. She is beginning to enjoy the book and reading. We then reviewed more basic Algebra skills."
"Vocabulary memorization techniques and review of basic algebra concepts with emphasis on circle circumference formula. The student gave great effort and stayed focused the entire time. He has a better grasp of substitution techniques of one variable for another."
"For today's session we practiced math. The student had a test that he needed to make corrections on. The concepts presented on the test were heavily saturated in division and multiplication. He is very good at these concepts, but he doesn't always show his work, which is why he had to complete test corrections. He did the correction with only a few misconceptions and once these were corrected he was on point with his answers."
"The student and I worked through a set of English problems on gerunds, then studied for a math test he has on fraction arithmetic. He knows all his material very well. I've been encouraging him to do sanity checks on his answers (i.e. 5.xx - 3.xx should give you an answer around 2), which will hopefully help him with this. "
"The student is getting MUCH better with her place values. She doesn't like to write out adding and subtraction and often misses simple steps that she knows if she looks at the problem. I would like to get her in the habit of writing everything down (every little step), and then transition her to doing simpler steps in the future. She wanted to get ahead in other homework because we had some extra time, so we did five extra pages of grammar. English is definitely her strong suit."
"Today the student and I went over the first practice test in his book. Specifically, we went over the reading portion of the test, completing all five passages. We did each section one at a time, stopping to check answers and go over any errors. We timed each section in an effort to mock the real time constraints of a real test. Regarding time, he did well for the most part. We discussed specific grammar points surrounding his errors, and he scored a total of 59 correct answers out of 75. During our next session, he and I will go over the essay part of the test, completing a practice essay. Then we will proceed with practicing the math portion of the test."
"Worked on simplifying expressions in Algebra 1-2 class. Worked on a variety of topics in Algebra 3-4 including synthetic division, zeroes of a function, and operations of functions. Good progress was achieved in these areas. With 2 classes and new material almost every day, it is a lot of information to take in. However, I believe the student is doing a good job, and I think these sessions will help with the large amount of material. I will continue to look for areas where we can work on previous material and reinforce foundation concepts."
