Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We began by going over the material we studied on Thursday. However, when I gave the student the quiz, he did not feel prepared. We went through the material (mainly postulates and theorems) together once more, and decided that he would review the sections (2.5 to 3.4) over the weekend on his own. He will also go through all of the material from chapters 1 and 2 again to make sure he hasn't forgotten anything. I have told him to complete the quiz I gave him over the weekend, and I will make another quiz for our next session. We then finished reviewing the reading comprehension section in ACT, and he completed the English ACT section practice exam as well. We began going through this test, but did not get a chance to finish. Next week, we will continue the geometry review from where we left off and will finish going though ACT English section."
"Continued to work through practice exams, to prepare student for his geometry exam. He continues to improve on the multiple choice section but tends to need help on the longer questions in parts 3-4. I reminded him of the importance of showing his work, so a missed calculation doesn't result in a big deduction."
"We worked through the student's summer work for Honors Geometry. She was familiar with some of it, but several aspects were new. I helped her to use the slope-intercept form of linear equations to find equations of perpendicular lines and to find y-intercepts of lines for which she had at least one coordinate point. She was given formulas to find midpoints of lines and medians of triangles, and I helped her to understand how to apply those formulas to the problems. She was also asked to use the elimination method to solve a system of equations. She hadn't done that before, so I demonstrated with an example, and then had her complete the problem. We also talked about what the solution to a system of equations can mean."
"Today was my second session with this student. For this session I found a geometry book online that she could download and we started working on that. We went through the first chapter of the book, going over definitions and doing problems from the sections. She is not struggling with anything at this point. Her homework is to go over the first chapter and do all of the practice problems."
"Today, we covered special right triangles, geometric mean, and similarity in right triangles. The student caught on quickly today and showed improvement with the algebra I concepts in solving these problems. The student is now able to simplify radicals and perform operations with radicals when solving problems involving the special right triangles."
"We went over a preview of geometry topics to be covered in class later. We went over a general introduction to geometry and a general overview of topics, and then went over logic rules and reasoning. We then went over parallel and perpendicular lines, as well as two-column proofs. Overall, the student seemed to understand the material we went over."
"We finished up the student's summer math packet. The questions we worked on dealt with area, volume, and surface area of different geometric figures. We also looked into some practice questions for the test that she will be taking in the future."
"Today, which the student and I went over a practice math assessment online. It was similar to what he'd done last year. The student seems to be pretty knowledgeable about most of the material. The session was more to refresh him of what he knew before and apply his skills to more math problems, which was a mixture of algebra and geometry. In addition to the online assessment, there was a school textbook and a geometry workbook to utilize for our session along with some geometry problems I brought with me."
"The student and I spent the session going over her homework, which was on surface area. Some of the problems required knowledge she needed to learn, such as the area of a trapezoid formula. I taught her any concepts she needed to learn, and we worked on solving problems together. For homework, I gave her a couple diagnostics, primarily focusing on fractions and decimals, among other topics."
"The student took a pre-geometry test and we reviewed her solutions to the test. We covered test taking and word problem tactics. We discussed binomial theorem, Pythagorean theorem, and estimating square roots. She seemed to have a strong grasp on classifying polygons and angles. The student also labeled and used the Cartesian graphs properly. She needs a little more work with polynomials, word problems, and slope intercept form."
"-Coordinate Geometry; distance formula, slope formula, equations for lines, midpoint formula, equation of a circle. -He performed very well in this section. -Nothing really, he's brought up that "speed" was a negative factor in his previous exams (I"
"We went over the homework I assigned the student last time, which he completed well. He understands almost all the concepts. We also began looking into trigonometry, which the student has never done before."
