Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over some math topics such as adding fractions with unlike denominators and finding angles of transversals. He then took a practice math test in parts (20 questions in 20 minutes), working on time. His accuracy has greatly improved, and he's feeling more confident."
"The student and I did some practice science questions together. Once she realized that she does not need to read all of the science passages, she did much better and was much happier. Her homework is to do the next practice test, and we will spend some time talking about essays."
"Today the students and I worked through practice ACT English and Reading sections. We completed the English section with lots of time to spare, and each girl only missed a few questions."
"The student and I covered a general strategy for each section of the test, with ways to help save time on particular questions. She definitely improved her techniques as the session continued. Mostly, she struggled with time management on the reading section, and a hit-or-miss score on the science questions. She is going to complete the last two practice tests sections she has before our next session."
"As an assignment, the student completed a complete ACT practice test. During our session, we reviewed and corrected in detail all of the work that she completed. We also did two reading passages together and consulted each other after each section. It is evident that her score in on the rise and that she should reach her goal if she increases the amount of work daily."
"I have been seeing lots of improvement in the student's strategy, which can help her improve her scores even if the subject material may be difficult. We only worked on math this session, but I can tell that the time management has helped quite a bit. Of the 13 problems she attempted while she started the test on her own, she only missed 2 or 3. Working on and answering the problems that come easier to her first (before the difficult ones, in fact first skipping over the difficult ones until later), will help her achieve a much better score. She will be able to answer the questions she knows she can, and will not spend time on very difficult problems until afterwards during her remaining time."
"We went over the English section of the ACT. We took a number of tests and focused on trying to answer one question every 36 seconds. When he took more time, his scores went up. Working with subject/verb agreement and parallelism are two things that still need work, but it looks like there's good improvement and we're on track. Extra practice will involve the ACT book, practice tests, and reading from the 2-min book. I also challenged him to read an article every day or every other day to improve his reading."
"We used screen sharing to do the test together in the form of flashcards. I'll be sending the student some more Science practice work for next session, when we'll continue looking at other subject material."
"We started the session with some math practice. We have largely focused on science, but I want to be identify any areas that need further practice in math. She missed 3 out of 27 questions completed in a 30 min window. She will finish the remaining questions in this section during our next lesson. The student also completed a timed science section, in which she was permitted only 5 min per passage. She was able to complete all but 2 questions in the time limit. Next session, we will continue to work on time management and attention to detail both in math and science."
"Our session today were spent on working through problems on the Math Practice Test 2 in the assessment. These problems covered: order of operations, factoring questions, area and perimeter of irregular polygons. We spent the final hour today working on questions in the English Practice Test 2. We are planning to meet again next Sunday for (3) hours again."
"This was our second-to-last session and we covered primarily math and science. She hasn't had extensive practice with Pre-Cal and Trig in the past so we covered the basics of these areas that she will need for the test. For our last appointment we will cover test day tips and talk about the student's writing."
"The student and I finished studying for the ACT today. We focused on math and science. She was able to make the mental connection between the problem and the information she already knew."
