Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student wanted to focus today on verbs that are conjugated in such a way that a 'y' appears in both the 3rd person singular and 3rd person plural forms in the preterite conjugations (for example 'creer' in the 3rd person singular preterite is 'creyo'). She said that she didn't understand when or how she needed to add the 'y.' I spent the first part of our session explaining when these special conjugations are called for (when the -ar, -er or -ir is preceded by a vowel) and then the rest of the session completing examples with her (conjugating verbs in the preterite in all of the persons) with varying degrees of help. We practiced verbs like 'construir,' 'creer,' 'oir' 'caer,' 'roer' and a few more. Whereas at the beginning of the session I essentially had to spell out all of the conjugations for her, by the end she could do them all herself, and I simply confirmed that she was doing it correctly. I felt that she made a great deal of progress during our hour-long session, and she did too (she said that she feels much more comfortable now)."
"To prepare for the student's upcoming test, we reviewed the formation of the passive voice (especially using "se"), uses of the infinitive (and how to distinguish those from similar sentences that take the subjunctive), and the future and conditional tenses. We worked with many example sentences in which she would need to conjugate the verb correctly, needing to recall irregular verbs, correctly identify subjects, etc. At the end of the session she expressed a lot more confidence in all these areas and seems ready for her test."
"The student spent her session applying the conjugation forms of frequently used Spanish verbs. She shared about her recent trip speaking in Spanish. She also spent time reading and discussing an article in Spanish."
