Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today was our first session together, meeting online. We covered the following topics: identifying trends/strengths/areas of improvement from past SAT scores, including having improved in passage-based reading, numbers/operations, geometry, improving sentences, identifying sentence errors, and gaining 1 point on the essay; she stayed the same but is already strong in Data and Improving Paragraphs, and stayed the same but could improving sentence completions, and algebra/functions. We identified the Math section as the area that she will need to focus on the most to improve her overall score, and to practice reading and vocab acquisition to raise the CR score. She will also want to work on raising her Essay score at least 1 or 2 points further, and focus on pacing and avoiding small errors within writing. We also spent time getting oriented to the different formats and tones of the materials."
"We worked through the various types of reading and writing questions, including critical reading of a passage, sentence completion, grammar, and editing of passages. The student showed herself to be remarkably adept at the grammar section, missing only one question. She needs some more work at reading with a purpose for the critical reading sections and more vocabulary work for the sentence completions. This week she is going to re-familiarize herself with SAT math, as well as working on a few practice problems and thinking critically about how she approaches the problems. Next week, we'll go through math and focus on needed improvements there. She will buy the SAT workbook so that we have a large stable of practice problems to work on, and I will set her up to work on vocab. It was a great first session."
"Today we talked about the grammar and math diagnostics the student had done for homework, identifying some grammar rules to solidify. We also worked through a critical reading passage together to practice the process for highlighting keywords. We finished our session by talking about how to work through word problems by translating words to math symbols and taking them one piece at a time. I think the biggest thing she needs to focus on at this point is building confidence. This is something we will work on moving forward."
