Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed last session, the brainstorming results and the student's writing topic selections. His assignment was to choose his topic and start writing, which he did. He continued working on the essay and then moved to two persuasive essays with contrasting opinions. We analyzed the structure and arguments. We brainstormed ideas for a persuasive essay regarding school uniforms. We worked on vocabulary and context and ended with two very different reading passages to practice test taking strategies. This student is very bright and cooperative."
"The girls went over the answers to a practice verbal reasoning section from the prep book. They mostly scored below fifty percent, and are feeling further demoralized about not being prepared enough for their test. I have assigned the girls practice vocabulary, in addition to more Latin and Greek roots. We spent much time going over the answers to the vocabulary section. Then we reviewed strategies for solving multi-step algebra problems using positive and negative counters. All of the girls showed signs of improvement with this process. Next week, they have a practice quantitative reasoning section and vocabulary to tackle."
"I worked with both students on vocab and math. I quizzed them on all the words we've worked on so far, and they both did very well! I'm impressed. We then did some vocabulary-dependent problem sets and worked on using process of elimination on the more difficult questions. Separately, we focused on different math topics. The first student worked on algebra - mainly on the technique of multiplying by the reciprocal of the coefficient to solve a problem in which the variable has a fractional coefficient - and slopes of lines. We also worked some quantitative comparison questions, focusing particularly on algebra techniques. The second student worked through a reading comprehension passage, and he only missed one question, which is an improvement! I assigned a couple more passages for his homework. Then, we worked on some math, focusing mostly on percentages, probability, and slope review."
