Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Me and the student met for our next session. Since we are a week away from the test, I tried to create a more test-like environment. That meant doing longer sections and being stricter about the time. While doing the regular practice sections, I also gave the student a lot of tips about timing."
"Today the student and I finished up the math section. We covered exponents, basic algebraic equations/ inequalities, geometry, and word problems. Next week I hope to start on the reading section with her."
"The student had completed her homework and taken the initiative to practice extra problems so that she knew what questions she'd want to ask me. We went over approaches to more difficult geometry problems and discussed ways to approach problems containing symbols she didn't recognize. She feels confident and is much better able to solve the basic algebraic equations that often got in her way in the first session."
"The student and I went over another practice test. We talked a lot about test taking strategies and what to look out for the most when writing essays. I have mentioned how sentence structure and cogent arguments in the essay are just as important as proper spelling and grammar. We also looked into how he can divide up his time writing each portion of the essay to leave room at the end of the allotted time to proofread. The essay is a large component of the English section and requires a lot of effort (more than most sections) to improve one's scores (especially considering that it is graded on only a 12 point scale). We'll be working on general test-taking strategies this Friday before he takes the exam to review and finalize all of what he's been working on so far. It has been great working with him and I have no doubt that with all the improvement he's made over the last few months, he can achieve a very admirable score on his ACTs."
"Analyzed a practice essay and came up with several examples for a couple, elaborating on specific details for argumentative support. Went through practice tests in writing and science, step by step as well as a few math problems."
"Our last session prior to the student's SSAT exam focused again on math, as that was her weakest score from her last exam. Under timed test conditions, she scored 23/25 on a practice math test. The two she missed we reviewed in depth. One was a simple error reading the information/ graph of the data problem, the other a proportion problem that gave one percentage and asked for the remainder. She approached it correctly but solved for the information given rather than the remainder. We worked passage by passage in reading comprehension, reviewing answers at the end of each, practicing strategies and reviewing information as necessary. We managed to complete 3 full passages, about half the test. She demonstrated high proficiency with these problems, not missing any of the questions."
"The student and I worked through 30 SAT math questions with a focus on ratios, algebraic expressions, systems of equations, and geometry. He struggled with setting many of the problems up, so we focused on understanding important information in the question and on creating algebraic expressions. We also talked about test-taking strategies for the math section. I have sent him additional work to be completed before our next session, which is scheduled for Monday."
"We ran through a practice math test. I stressed the importance of completing more practice exams over the weekend. The student has a good grasp on the concepts but still struggles with time management on the test."
"The student and I worked on all aspects of the SAT during the session. We are concerned about the sentence completion section and really drilling new vocabulary to try to improve that section. We are also addressing hard math problems and that is working out well. Slowly we're going through grammar concepts so he can improve on the writing section, and he was assigned to write an essay and do all three other sections for homework."
"This was a great session. We did many more review problems from the flashcards. We also went over the structure of the SAT Math section and identified any big areas we need to keep studying for."
"The student and I covered vocabulary in context and reviewed answers. We reviewed math word problem solving strategies and did some exercises. He says he understands the strategies, but when left on his own, he has trouble picking out an appropriate strategy to solve a math problem. When walked though step by step, he can successfully compute an answer. Trying to reinforce key points to look for that will better help him choose a strategy. We'll work on that in our next session."
"The student and I worked through about 25 problems of a practice SAT math test. We covered any concepts that came up as problem areas - the equation for a circle, the distance formula, percentages, etc. He was very focused and I can already see he is making progress. I am about to send him 14 practice problems to look at before our next session."
