Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student did an excellent job with his homework assignment tonight. He understands how to identify like terms and how to combine them. There are multiple steps to the problems he was simplifying, and by the end he was able to do everything on his own. We also practiced flash cards with multiples of three and I left them for him to practice over the weekend. I will then bring the multiples of four to the next session. He has done a great job writing out and showing his work."
"The student and I continued with probability, working on 2 different lesson plans. He feels real comfortable with the first lesson plan but we will review the second lesson again. After working out a few he was able to understand some of the problems. Next session we are going to be concentrating on the second section again."
"In preparation for his test on Monday, the student and I continued through Chapter 3, covering derivatives of trigonometric functions, implicit differentiation, and related rates. We went over important formulas and visualizations to remember for the test, and did practice problems from each section covered. We also reviewed the problems on his quizzes."
"The student is beginning a new unit on medicine and the body. We went over the specialized vocabulary for the doctor's office, body parts, etc., and practiced sorting the words in various ways - by topic, by part of speech, by what words typically go together (the appropriate verb for introducing puntadas, etc.) His homework included making a crossword of the new vocabulary, so I helped him identify strategies for finding the word based both on meaning and spelling. He has a quiz coming up, primarily on vocabulary. We identified a number of pairs of words that can be difficult to distinguish (torcerse vs. tropezar, el tobillo vs. la rodilla, cortarse vs. chocar, silla vs. sala, etc.) and came up with mnemonics for the most difficult pairs. He seems to be making good progress with the new vocabulary and reported that be got at B on his midterm."
"Went over SOL test homework. Multiplication and division of fractions. Simplification. Classification of quadrilaterals and polygons. Word problems. Multiplication and Division review. Comparing decimals and fractions. Left homework on fraction multiplication/division. Decimal/fraction comparisons."
"The student and I have been slowly but surely building a simple Java application that creates a dog object, modifies that dog object, and then prints out different facts about the dog that he has created. He is starting to really grasp the concepts. It is so fun to see him making progress!"
