Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we covered the task of analyzing an argument. The student needs help brainstorming and moving between general and specific examples in her body paragraphs. She has a strong grasp of the English language, but is still learning how to form a logical, cogent structure. We ran through the pre-writing for a variety of prompts together. She seems to be much more comfortable generating good examples."
"Today the student and I reviewed basic writing concepts in terms of grammar, punctuation, and paragraph structure, and we reviewed a lot of concepts, but she caught on very quickly with them all. We then discussed the different essay types and concluded that she could use more focused work on the issue essay, so we did a practice brainstorm together and came up with a solid structure for an essay. Overall, she has been a great student and she should be very confident going into test day!"
"We continued working on vocabulary and reading comprehension for the analytical writing section of the exam. I am starting to see some improvement in the student's ability to construct meaningful, complex sentences. I encouraged him to try to change up the times/locations/methods of his studying to combat burnout, as he will be studying for the next two months. I am also attempting to continue mixing in different study materials (books, television, internet) to make his grasp on English grammar and syntax more natural."
"Today we worked through an argument topic essay that the student had written after our last session. We went through it paragraph by paragraph correcting different mistakes in grammar and punctuation. We also worked on identifying sentences that use passive constructions and editing those to be active. We also discussed some differences that I have noticed in the fluidity of his writing on the issue topic essay versus the argument topic essay. For our next session, the student will write an argument topic essay from one of his books that we can discuss in depth at the start of the session, and then he will prepare an outline of an issue topic essay so that we can work on his writing in preparation for the test."
"We began this session by discussing the exam Analytical Writing Issue Essay. Student was concerned about generating evidence examples, so we worked on methods for finding examples off of which she could craft a thesis. After working through two prompts, we discussed potential body paragraph work. I asked her to complete a series of example lists and write one of the essays that we brainstormed over the course of this week. Moving forward, we will be focusing on example production, thesis generation, time management, and specific Argument Essay tactics."
"The student and I focused on Logic Games today. Specifically, and we focused on a vertical sequencing logic game just to get him re-acquainted with the subject after a long layoff. He was struggling with the material at first, but really applied himself and got a strong second wind. We'll be meeting again tomorrow to finish off the rest of that Logic Games section and get in some timed drilling. I think our biggest win from today was just getting back in the saddle."
