Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I covered polar coordinate calculus with the student. We went over some homework and I explained that integration is the area between two curves. I also showed him trig substitution and converting polar equations to rectangular. I tried to explain things in a way that would help the student organize all the information he'd been studying so he can access the right information when he needs to. The student knows a lot of the material, but is still learning which method to use when. I tried to help the student link information together so he can know what to do in the future."
"For the first session, I wanted to take some time to get to know the student. We discussed what he likes and doesn't like about reading and his favorite books. I am hoping to get him more interested in reading by providing material he may find interesting. Then, I did a few diagnostic tests to see where his strengths and weaknesses are in reading. He did a good job on the vocabulary, but we will continue to work on improving his academic vocabulary. He also was able to answer basic comprehension questions which will allow us to work on his critical thinking skills. We will also focus a great amount on fluency and improving his WPM."
"Student and I reviewed questions in a math test that she worked on over the weekend and had questions about. We also started a sheet of formulas for her to review for the test. Then we worked on some English questions and discussed the reading section. We marked some tests for her to work on before our next session on Wednesday."
"The student and I did an activity where she decided the color -- in Spanish -- that she wanted to color a letter and then told me the name of the letter. We used this as a way to firm up her knowledge of colors in Spanish and to work on her learning in a tactile, fun way. Next, we did a jumping/dancing activity that integrated her knowledge of numbers in Spanish with movement. After that, we played Go Fish again with numbers -- I think she understood the game much better this time and showed a real knowledge of her numbers and the game. Finally, we worked on some puzzles that have the alphabet and numbers. Another good session!"
"The student and I had a general overview of the SAT II Biology M where I explained the format, question types and strategies. We also talked about his experience with high school biology, areas he wants to improve and topics on the test we should focus on. The student is receiving a copy of the Review SAT II for next week and we will be jumping right into content then."
