Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I met for a session of SAT tutoring. We first went over some homework, and then turned to his new book. We explored the different aspects of the book and how to use it. We then did some practice problems on probability. The student did pretty well but still needed my help. We also practiced Critical Reading and grammar. For homework I made sure to assign him an essay."
"This was our last session before the student took the SAT, so we reviewed all three sections of the SAT. We spent the majority of our time focusing on the essay and grammar, as these are what the student has had the most trouble with. Over the course of this month, she has shown a good deal of improvement on the writing multiple choice. Before, he often relied on intuition to answer the grammar questions, which often resulted in him struggling with the more difficult questions. Now, he is able to explain the specific errors in the questions and understand why something is right or wrong, rather than just knowing because it sounds right. On the reading, the student is in very good shape and has strong reading comprehension skills, although he has a bit more trouble with the harder vocabulary questions. With the math, we focused on the numbers and operations questions and worked on finding patterns in the sequence and series questions that could help him answer the questions."
"The student's ability is around an 1800 right now. We went over her mistakes from before and practiced 3 sections today. For homework, please begin reviewing math in the book in addition to doing an average of 2 sections per day."
"The student scored a 32 on her reading section, a 34 on her science section, and a 10 on her essay! She's doing very well. I asked he to complete an English section, a reading section, and an essay for next time."
"The student had taken the first half of the ACT on 6/24 and felt good about her math section but not totally the Reading. We worked through a reading section as well as a science section. On the reading section, she struggled when she tried to only skim the passage but did much better when she read it in full. She did great on the science."
"The student and I went over the English, Reading, and Writing sections she took. She still has difficulty with commas and "linking"/"insertion" type questions for the English section so I asked her to do some practice problems in the Prep workbook she has. Her reading section improved greatly from our previous session. Lastly, her essay was overall strong in content but needed work in the way she organized and worded it. I assigned another reading section and essay for her to work on for next time."
"The student took a practice test over the weekend. He has covered all of the Math content in school and was comforted when I pointed out that most Math in the section looks more advanced than it actually is. For the next session (tomorrow), I am having him do the English section of the next practice test (timed) and will bring in more English questions for us to focus on so we can go through the strategies for the English section more thoroughly."
"We continued reviewing math topics such as functions, slopes, and funky functions before practicing through two sections from the guide. The student quickly remembered the concepts and was able to handle most of the problems on her own. She recognized when to use appropriate strategy and only needing a little prodding here and there. We then finished by going over a handful of grammatical topics and associates questions. The student had a great handle with these as well."
"Today, we worked on passages from the reading and science sections of the test. The student needs to improve on retention and speed, so we'll work on active reading techniques. He did extremely well on the science, missing approximately 1 question per passage."
"We spent the first 15 minutes discussing the student's personal essay that she must write for her summer English homework. We set a schedule of deadlines for the essay. The remainder of the session was devoted to the English, Reading, Math and Science portions of the ACT. The student got about 8/10 questions right on the two passages she did by herself under timed conditions. This is slightly better than her most recent ACT test. She said that she thinks she would benefit from reading more, so we discussed that as a goal for her this summer. The student does well on the grammar part of the English test. She is going to take a full practice test between now and our next session."
"We went over a complete ACT that he took last week, looking for patterns of mistakes and areas of difficulty."
"In this session, the student and I returned to the practice test we had begun a few sessions ago at his mother's request. We finished the remaining sections of the test and calculated his scaled scores for all three section types, then used those scores to determine which strategies and skills needed further review for each section. After going over several representative questions from among those that the student had missed, and refreshing the content knowledge or test-taking techniques that would have been most helpful for answering them, we used our last 10 to 15 minutes to reinforce the students confidence about the Math section and to go over general test-day tips. This was the last session that the student and I will have before his SAT test date; I wish him the very best of luck on Saturday, and look forward to working with him next week as we prepare for his ACT."
