Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student had a copy of his last Spanish test on the subjunctive test, as well as copies of the scantron, so we went through it item by item to try to figure out where he made mistakes. It turns out that he has some trouble differentiating between the more advanced tenses, such as imperfect vs conditional vs future, and when subjunctive is thrown in there, it tends to confuse him. We spent the final 20 minutes practicing writing out conjugations for all 7 tenses, using different verbs and pronouns."
"Today, we went over math and essay writing. We focused primarily on organizing essay structure, discussing various techniques for the student to employ and ways for him to organize his thoughts cleanly into essay form. He needs the most work on coming up with ideas but once he wrote an outline for an essay, he became much more confident about his ability to write the essay."
"We worked on a project developing a family crest and the Middle Ages. We went over the significance of each piece of the crest: the colors and the animal. We went over the Magna Carta. The student had to create his own version of the Magna Carta. "
"Reviewed multiplication and division topics in preparation for final exam tomorrow. Focused on conceptual ideas and writing descriptions of mathematical processes in student's own words as this was what she was having the most trouble with. If she is able to understand the problems she should do well answering them as she has the concepts and models down. I emphasized with her to ask the teacher for clarifications of English phrasing etc. if she is having trouble understanding the problems."
"The student and I continued working on his summary of "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry." He did well in responding to my corrections. In his rewriting, he made a few more minor errors, but we were able to correct them easily. He should be able to continue working on his own, though we may continue working on it together tomorrow."
"Since our last session, the student had completed part of the next practice test. We reviewed the sections he completed, addressing questions he had missed or had guessed on. In the math section, we discussed a few of the more difficult concepts that some of the questions addressed, and with which he was unfamiliar. We also talked about how to look for ways to make a question easier before solving algebraically. He said that as a whole he felt more confident this time around, and his scores seem to be improving."
"Introductory session with the student. Spent the first 15 minutes getting to know the student. Talked about his tutoring needs. Spent the remaining time preparing for his test. Helped him organize notes. Created study cards for character identifications and essay questions."
"Discussed conceptual ideas about springs/pendulums, and simple harmonic motion. We reviewed all of her practice problems; spring problems, amplitude/frequency/period, and gravitational PE vs. elastic PE vs. KE. She had enough time to also work on several of the numerical problems and we discussed strategies for solving the remainder of the problems."
"During this session, the student and I reviewed the practice test that she had been given to study for her chemistry test. There were many questions regarding thermodynamics and specific heat capacity, as well as phase change diagrams and vapor pressure diagrams. Many of the questions had to do with graph interpretation. She seemed to do very well on most of the test, she just had some minor issues with calculations. She seems to be more confident in her abilities, and I feel as though she will do well on her test!"
"During this session with the student we continued learning about Array Lists and function. We designed a "hangman" game that utilized ArrayLists to store and retrieve random words that would be used to play the game, and we used functions to visually display the game as we played it. The student got to see how functions and ArrayLists could be used together to produce something tangible."
"The topics that the student and I covered were adiabatic and isothermal gas systems along with some thermodynamics calculations. At the end of the session we went over a few useful things to add to the student study sheet."
"Reviewed quizzes and homework for chapter 2 in preparation for chapter 2 test later this week. The student reported the results of the previous quizzes."
