Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In our session today, the student and I spent most of our session going over decimals, ratios, and algebra. He did very well with the topics we covered today."
"We focused on math, specifically creating algebraic expressions and word problems. I then assigned a section of math for homework."
"The student completed one section of a practice test online, and a complete practice test in his 6-test review book. I don't have that one, and will purchase it so that we can work together on practice tests. Tad has taken the placement exam in the past, and so is familiar with format and timing. He didn't run out of time on any of the sections, but just finished one of the math sections. We worked out a raw score for his practice test. We talked about general strategies and then began with vocabulary. We looked over some Latin and Greek root words and the vocab list in the book. He has already begun studying vocab using an app. I told him this was fine. We talked about finding mnemonics when we can. He seems to have a fine memory for learning new words which is amazing, as vocab is the hardest score to drive up. I will quiz him on some words next session. We moved on to sentence completion and talked strategy. He already knew a few of the strategies, but we reviewed and went over basics for this section. The student is strong in math, and so we flipped through pages of basic math skills, pausing where practice was helpful (percentages and word problems). I showed him a few examples of what to do when he can't remember the math; we will continue this when we review the practice tests. We spent the last part of the session discussing how to approach the reading comp section. We talked about active reading and taking a few steps after reading, before looking at the questions. This will become more and more important as the passages get longer and more difficult."
