Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Student 1 and I made notes for three sections of his biology chapter. Student 2 and I went over his Italian assignment, and he finished the outline for his English essay."
"This tutoring session was a great one! I first determined for which classes the student needed to complete homework. In addition to having to complete math and English homework, she needed to prepare for a math test scheduled for the following day. After determining this, I immediately began assisting her with studying for her test, which would cover algebraic expressions. Although she tended to confuse three of expressions, she did well otherwise, and I was pleased with her overall comprehension of the subject matter. She successfully completed the homework and test review. Her English homework required her to determine the definition of words from context clues, as well as to determine the synonyms and antonyms of words. Unfortunately, the session was over before she completed it, but she assured me that she understood the material enough to complete it on her own. At the end of the session, I spoke with her parents, and I expressed how pleased I was with her progress during the session, and they expressed how pleased they were about the fact that she was able to complete the amount of work. Finally, she was so happy about her progress."
"I had my first tutor session with the student. We took some time for myself to become familiarized with how his school teaches his subjects/sets work and projects. He attends a computer school with a focus in energy, and so all of the materials and a lot of homework is online. He is taking a total of six subjects- p.e. and geography are his favorite subjects. The pedagogy of his school requires students to teach themselves the concepts, and then they complete worksheets and activities during class time. I think that the main struggle for the student is learning the material by himself- he understands most of the material but sometimes cannot see how the concepts connect together. This is particularly the case with biology. We spent the rest of the session going over his current biology material- genetic mutations. We also completed one of his online practice tests. He has a project coming up that will be based on this material so, I tried to help him feel more confident with identifying the differentiation's between different types of mutations. I informed him that I will have a little biology problem set for the next tutor session that will ask about different mutations. He is a bright and funny student. I think that with a little guidance on studying skills that he will do very well in all his subjects and he should not have to drop advanced biology for normal biology."
"We looked at adverbs and their proper use. We also covered long responses in her ELA workbook, and continued to work on annotations. Towards the end of the session I also reviewed her corrected math workbook. Her math workbook looked great! She had only a few wrong answers and quickly understood the corrections. She has made a very specific plan for the homework that she has to get done over break, and has made allowances for doing more work than assigned."
"The student and I worked on correcting his book report. He found some extra selections in the book that he could use to expand parts where his teacher wanted him to expand. His writing was clear and his ideas were good. He needed help finding the right ideas in the book to quote. Ordering ideas in prose seems to sometimes present difficulties. We will continue working on the report at our next session. After that we went over his vocabulary and did some exercises. He did this very well, and I was very favorably impressed with the level of his vocabulary."
"We talked about his essay topic for English class, his Reading class book, and checked the assignments online. He finished his math homework online and said he'd finish his Science worksheet."
