Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I began the session by taking a quiz on the word parts and vocab I had assigned her for this week. She did well on both. We've decided to continue with the vocab and stop the weekly word part quizzes. The student and I then reviewed her essay. She did very well on it, but there were some grammar errors. We discussed these and some ways in which she could improve the organization of the essay. We then reviewed analogies from the official assessment study guide. We'd done a lot of analogies from another book, but I wanted her to work with official analogy questions, as I thought they'd be clearer. She did much better with these questions, so we moved onto math. We spent the rest of the session working math problems and I was thoroughly impressed by the student's mathematical ability. While working the questions we reviewed the rules for dealing with exponents and perpendicular lines. For our next session, I've asked the student to learn 20 vocab words and complete two exercises from her book on exponents. I also let her know that I'll be asking her to take a full-length practice test some time in the near future. The student is doing a great job and I look forward to seeing how she does on the practice test!"
"We focused on math today. The student's actual arithmetic ability is strong, but we need to make sure that he isn't making mistakes on easy problems. We reviewed skills involved in interpreting a graph and understanding and plotting a line. We reinforced the concept of slope and perpendicular slope, which we had worked on last week. Next session, I will bring more slope and graphing problems for the student to practice with. We also practiced a little with the student's vocabulary words, as he needed reinforcement of these as well. For the next session, I asked him to complete one math and one reading section."
"We focused on vocabulary today. The student completed a vocabulary quiz, and a quiz on word parts. He also practiced analogies and synonyms. He took a few practice tests and is doing better with them."
