"Today the student worked on the two new workbooks I brought. They are the core curriculum for Reading and Sight Words for Kindergarten. We also used the rhyming flash cards and practiced writing words from four of the cards. We read a book and finished with another."
"The student was very focused and worked hard today! We started by taking a look at her Winter Recess homework-- we practiced reading and writing 2 new lists of sight words, and then did a little bit of phonics. Once we got through the homework for the day, we worked on a number of different reading worksheets: she wrote a story using her list of sight words from last week, we did some puzzles to practice sight reading, and a worksheet to practice spelling and identifying rhymes. She seems to be getting more confident at working things out for herself, and is using the skills she has to sound out new words and figure out patterns. Tomorrow we'll look at more of her homework, and continue to build on the skills we were using today."
"I brought a new book for the student to read, "The Stranger" by Chris Van Allsburg, which he read with aplomb. He's great about sounding out words even if he isn't familiar with them and can either use context clues for meaning or isn't ashamed to ask for a definition. After the reading, we practiced cursive then made a "book report" detailing what he liked about the book and what happened. After his report we did some free form writing where he wrote about his day."
