Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"After going through all of the student's assignments, we decided to devote our time again to Spanish and algebra. We worked through his workbook pages together. The new section of vocabulary is a little more difficult for him and is taking a bit more review. He intended to complete his vocabulary tri-fold on his own after I was gone. This will help to instill the vocabulary terms in his mind. After this he spent the rest of the time working on his algebra homework. This homework involves graphing a system of equations in search of a coordinate solution that satisfies both equations on the graph. He had a little difficulty at the beginning with these problems, but after working through a few with additional instruction and assistance, he was able to grasp the concepts."
"The student and I checked his grades and planner and talked about what's coming up for the next week or so. We worked on revising his English essay per the teacher's recommendation and submitted that. He also worked on his chemistry assignment and we studied for his quiz tomorrow. We talked about the rough draft of his paper he turned in today and agreed he will continue to edit it this weekend. He agreed to do his missing health assignment tonight and will turn in his Spanish assignment tomorrow. We ended by taking a couple of practice drivers ed tests as the student is anxious about taking it next week. He was prepared for the session and seemed to have a good idea of what he needed to work on tonight, which was great!"
"The student's geography test was postponed until Monday. On this past Monday, she made an 86.67 B on her reading quiz covering Key Issues 5.3 & 5.4. She was commended on the grade and how close it is to an A, showing significant improvement over the last one. She still has time to study for Monday's test and had more pressing homework to do, so she did some geometry. Once completed, we reviewed geography packets for Key Issues 5.1 & 5.2 in preparation for the test."
"The student had missed a few class periods and had some catching up to do before a test on Monday. The material we discussed included triangles and the properties of different inscribed lines. We went over medians, altitudes, perpendicular bisectors, angles bisectors, centroids, orthocenters, incenters, and circumcenters."
"The student and I specifically discussed an article summary homework assignment for his Life Science class. We looked at his current and upcoming homework assignments and discussed options for staying abreast of his work and getting caught up. We discussed his role in taking more ownership of his homework schedule and organizing his work. I introduced various strategies for building age-appropriate and developmentally-appropriate organization skills. It is my opinion that he is highly capable of improving in this area and functioning at a degree commensurate with his age and grade level; he just needs adequate motivation to do so."
"Since the student was granted extra time to study for his science test, our session focused solely on the content of this test (ionic and covalent bonds). We also spent time organizing his book bag, binders, and planner, seeing as his disorganization seems to be the root of most of his issues. I created a handout on ionic and covalent bonds for him to study from, as well as two practice tests (one we did together, and another for him to use as a last minute study tool on the day of the test). If we can get him to stay more organized regularly, he will be unstoppable! I think he will do very well on this test."
