Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student called panicked over her test review for algebra, concerning ellipses. She had some problems with a few of the word problems and applications so I had to help her with those. She needs help with identifying what part of the word problem, goes to which part of the formula, so I showed her some identifying key words, and made sure to go over some more practice problems with her. to keep her calm."
"The student and I covered the equations for ellipses and she did her homework assignment. We also did a comprehensive review of the distance and midpoint formulas, parabolas and circles for her test on Friday. She did really well at this section."
"We had a great session. For her upcoming Algebra II test, we reviewed the more difficult Algebra II (exponential, log, ln, e, decay/growth) concepts as well as built on foundation elements (converting percents to decimals and vice versa, "undoing" order of operation to find variable). We spent a lot of time on setting up the correct exponential/decay equations for given word problems and substituting the appropriate values to find the answer. We made a lot of progress last night, and I'm pleased with the meeting."
"The student and I worked on transformation of trigonometric graphs. We focused on identifying the necessary components (period, phase shift, vertical translation and amplitude) from the equation, graphing the equation, and then identifying the components from the graph in order to compose the correct equation. He did an excellent job, sticking with each problem until it was perfect! Well done!!"
"The student is working on FOIL and we had a worksheet to do. She understands how to do it and did well. We worked for an hour today."
"We reviewed for her coming final exam. She asked about the interpretation of the line integral of a vector field over a closed loop equaling zero. So we talked about path independence. Afterward, we went through a series of problems from a review sheet given out by her professor."
"For this session, we covered arcs and circle segments for Geometry, and for Algebra II, we covered the unit circle again. The student did very well with circles and memorizing the unit circle, and I encouraged him to continue practicing with the unit circle throughout the week."
"We went over an involved 4x4 matrix problem using the Gauss-Jordan matrix elimination method. We worked through the matrix and we were able to solve the matrix for the four variables by the time the session ended."
"The students and I reviewed the chi square test for goodness of fit and the 2 other chi square tests for 2 way tables. We also talked about linear regression t-tests for slope and t-intervals for slope. We did several problems on each of these as they were preparing for an upcoming quiz."
"The student and I worked through some old tests today to further sharpen her integration skills, and then we re-reviewed the sequence and series concepts, with special emphasis on series convergence tests. She remembered the convergence tests well. Overall, though, I think she's in good shape for her final."
"Today the student and I worked through a challenging worksheet on sinusoidal functions and determining best fit for modeling data. He does an excellent job of reasoning through questions. He is capable of working through problems even when they are difficult. We also briefly discussed his quiz tomorrow, although a lot of the worksheet lent itself to the material for the quiz. I pointed out the pages in his book that he needed to look at to study tonight and we will focus on geometry next week."
"We reviewed Ch.6 (Polynomial functions), domain, range and exponential functions. She asked great questions; it seemed to go very well! We'll meet again Monday, Thursday, and the following Monday. We will do more if needed before her final exam."
