Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We continued reviewing ACT science. There were no issues with foundational skills (reading data in visual and verbal form, identifying relationships, making predictions), so we went on to guided practice. I had the student do some work based on his performance, which indicated an ability to deal with more complicated situations with more data. He responded to prompting with high accuracy and understanding. However, there were some issues with the timed mini-prep. Adding a time limit to a high amount of data made it difficult for him to finish on time, and he also skipped some problems that he would have been able to solve given more time. We went back to guided practice with some less crowded sample passages to practice more quickly, and accurately identifying the relevant variable and relationships to a given question. We finished by returning to the more data-heavy questions, and he again did very well in response to my guidance. There were no observed understanding issues, so I think this will be a matter of drilling until he feels more comfortable cutting through extraneous verbiage to answer on his own. I feel that with more exposure to difficult ACT science material, he will rise to the challenge and have an easier time with the actual ACT. We will warm up with another time trial next time, followed by the English section."
"We finished diagnostic 2 for reading comprehension. We made a list of 43 words to work on for next time (sentences, definition, connotation)."
"Today, the student finished nearly all her homework. She's still leaving a few problems blank, but overall, her confidence has risen and she seems much more willing to try for hard problems even when she isn't sure of the method to reach the answer. She also did some writing homework, and did fairly well on that. Her confidence has risen quite a bit, and we've gotten through quite a bit of math review. While she definitely still has room to improve, she's come a long way since we started. Our new method for learning vocab -- using the words in a sentence -- is working well for her. We're moving to timed practices. I didn't feel that she has been ready for this previously, but now I think she has a better shot at keeping accurate while moving quickly."
