Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I took a look at his course load, discussed and identified his learning style, and identified holes in his educational experience. We concluded that this student was an auditory learner and verbal processor, meaning he learns information best by hearing it and then verbalizing it to others. It was identified that the student already had some of the basic organizational skills and resources available to him to be successful in his studies, and I was able to assist him in learning how to best utilize those materials for success. We concluded the session by setting the student up with a "game plan" for his homework and current studies that he could carry out with a parent or peer. The parent or peer will act as a sounding board for the student in order to assist him in verbally processing the information he is studying, thus allowing the student to learn using his specific learning style."
"The student and I completed 2 writing assignments, and we also selected his topic for a research paper. He completed all of his computer class assignments. As usual, the student was hard working and a pleasure to work with."
"The student worked on a simple presentation for his English class. He had to research actual instances of weather modification and apply them to utopian ideals found in the book, The Giver. He had some good research as well as engaging responses to the concepts in question. He stayed on focus for the most part, and was open to my comments."
"Today we reviewed and the novel "Ender's Game." The student was amazing! He answered 22 out of 24 questions correctly and was able to explain why he thought one of the wrong answers should be correct in a valid manner. Additionally, his answers to open-ended questions were insightful and showed he grasped the novel and was able to see how it related to the real world. He was able to understand how the author was explaining perspective and how it correlated with other similar ideas."
"The student has an exam this week on the nervous system, eyes, ears and chemical substance reactions to the body like alcohol or drugs. We reviewed all the material and focused on connecting the different sections of the systems to comprehensively understand how these systems work. He needs to work more outside of our tutor sessions. Even if he doesn't understand the material, he could prepare questions he needs answered, and I told him to focus on writing down questions."
"In this evening's session, we worked on math concepts and a writing assignment. In math, the student has previously demonstrated difficulties as it relates to negative and positive integers within numeric operations. Through discussion and a provided note page, we reviewed the rules for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing with integers. He then completed practice items related to this concept. After completing the aforementioned practice items, he practiced applying his knowledge of integers to solving systems of equations using elimination. He understands the process of solving these equations. He was left with practice items involving integers and numeral operations in isolation. Related to writing, we reviewed the organization of a writing task that is due at a later date and visited spelling as it related to this writing task."
