Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we worked with adding, multiplying, dividing, and simplifying fractions. This is an area where the student needed help a little bit, so I felt it best that we spend some time on it. We then solved two equations with two variables by using the substitution and elimination techniques. We spent the rest of the time doing a GED diagnostic test."
"In this session, the student and I reviewed for her final exam. We worked through the review pages her teacher provided. She had already starred exercises and topic she needed the most help with. This included using the rational remainder theorem for polynomials and graphing sinusoidal functions. We also covered using synthetic substitution to evaluate polynomials, and worked through proving some trigonometric identities. She did well with a majority of the material and plans to work through the entire review sheet so we can discuss the exercises in our next session before the exam."
"Concepts covered today include trig identities, logarithms, simplifying expressions, and normal distribution. The student appears to be at the top of her A-game and is not struggling up to this point. The only comment I have for the student is to be careful when setting up equations and while solving equations. The student has her math exam Friday and is feeling confident. Extra practice comes from the teacher, and I feel this student is headed in the right direction."
"The student and I discussed the meaning of some tabulated data that may be related to the amplitudes of each sine function. We spent some time working on another way to fit the data and ultimately still need to better determine what all the data he has tabulated means. We will work on this at our next session."
"The student and I spent some time getting to know each other by discussing his goals, strengths, and weaknesses. We then delved into trigonometry and covered the 6 trig functions, radians and degrees, and explored the unit circle. The student struggled a little with some of the brand new concepts and vocabulary, but he began to understand them with further repetition and proofs. I left him with some extra practice problems. Next session, we will focus on SAT prep. He had a good attitude overall despite some difficulty in conceptual understanding; he asked questions for clarification. We will continue to work on the problem points in the next session."
"We did an overview of her whole course in preparation for her final, which is next Tuesday. Most of the student's struggles are with remembering formulas and processes (ex. the unit circle and how it can be used with the Pythagorean Theorem to solve problems). She remained very positive, however, and was receptive to explanations that I gave to further her understanding. I included a few strategies for her to use, but we mostly focused on the memory techniques she was taught previously."
