Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we worked on the student's math worksheets on imaginary numbers. He was able to pick up this material fairly quickly. He did not really struggle with performing operations on imaginary numbers after we went over several examples. I did not think this material was too tough for him, and he feels much more confident for this unit test. Lastly, the third worksheet dealt with higher powered "i". I taught him few strategies on grouping the "i"s into groups of 4 to help him reduce some of the complex problems."
"We went over verbs for morning actions. We discussed geography in Spain, body parts in Spanish and conjugating verbs for the five senses in Spanish. The last thing we went over was vocabulary for items in the bathroom. He struggled most with conjugating the verbs for the five senses. He had a good attitude towards the material and was excited to perfect the material. I told him to use flashcards to memorize conjugations of irregular words. I also told him to keep a list of nouns that are exceptions to the el/la rule for example la mano."
"Today, we began to complete some of the homework he has missed. I taught him how to factor cubic functions using synthetic division and by grouping. Although I feel we made progress today, I think it would be helpful to get in much more practice with all the things we went over so far so that he can better commit the concepts he learns to memory. I have been trying to encourage him to be able to explain the things I teach him and focus on applying the concepts he is learning. For future sessions, I am hoping to also help him achieve a higher level of attention to what he is doing, and I believe that will help him progress more efficiently."
"In this session, the student and I worked on writing quadratics in vertex form and then using that to graph them. There were times where he was able to do the problems alone, which was great. I would encourage him to continue to do a variety of problems surrounding this topic as there is no "One Way" to write these type of problems. We left our session with him knowing the steps to finding the vertex form of an equation and using the critical points to graph. This happened to also have been a review for completing the square."
"We worked on problems from her assignments that covered: determining whether an equation represents y as a function of x and then finding the domain in interval notation, determining the domain and intercepts of a function, solving quadratic word problems, finding three consecutive odd integers, finding the dimensions of a rectangle when given the side measures as algebraic expressions, evaluating functions for values/binomials, and determining whether a function is even, odd, or neither. During our session I showed her the Box Method for multiplying binomials, how to break down the Quadratic Formula into simple steps, and an easy way to factor any trinomial. We had a really good session! She worked really hard and asked some great questions!!"
"Today, the student and I worked on box and whisker plots, bivariate data, and the Pythagorean theorem. She is a very hard working student. She grasps the material quickly. She is a total joy to tutor."
