Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I met the student for our first two hour session to help her prepare for the June exam in Geometry. To uncover areas that are presenting particular problems we used the most recently released test from January. I left the remainder of the practice test for her to work on. We will pick up where we left off in our next session"
"We worked on the review packet and focused on the topics the student highlighted on the packet. I observed that he picked up on logarithms during the session."
"The student has his math final coming up. He has a couple of practice sheets reviewing the subject matter he needs to know for his test. We worked through the statistics review. He needed some reminders of what some of the concepts meant but he was able to get the correct answers once we did some review. I think he will do well on his test."
"Today we covered functions, graphing transformations, and solving linear inequalities. We worked on several problems together and developed a mnemonic to help with remember the rules for graphing transformations. I assigned homework at the end of the session to review what had been covered and what to plan for. Homework: Review sections for quiz on Tuesday; Complete assigned problems; start reading "Death of a Salesman.""
"The student had the results of a math assessment that indicated she was about a grade and a half below level. I had her work through some simple examples, which she clearly understood. I identified several gaps in her abilities - primarily with fractions and geometry. The student's mother will obtain the text book that she will use next year and I will also construct practice problems to work through between our sessions."
"We finished up and reviewed the sections on surface area. We moved on to volume-- reviewing and completing homework problems from sections 12-5, 12-6, and 12-7. This material came a lot more quickly to the student, who barely needed any help once I reminded her of the processes. We worked on updating her study guide of formulas for the test and I communicated to her that her test would be on Monday, after a brief review. I gave her a practice test worksheet to complete over the weekend in order to help her review."
"We covered graphing, slope, and intercepts today through the completion of the student's current homework. Hel has great foundational skills and only needed brief cues to refresh his memory on skills he learned from Intermediate Algebra. The focus of our sessions will be to complete homework."
"Today, we covered derivatives and integrals of exponential, logarithmic, and inverse trigonometric functions; finding the volume of regions rotated about a given axis; and refreshed inverse functions in general and applied that knowledge to calculus (so answering calculus questions about the inverse function based on the graph/knowledge of the original function). Today went very quickly and the student did very well probably due especially to the fact that today was more calculation and algebra driven. (The students these types of problems.)"
"Today the student worked on his final exam review packet. The student was not fluent with the concepts we covered very early on in the school year. As he progressed through the pages, he began to remember how to solve the respective problems which is good to see. I strongly encouraged him to work on the page he left off tonight so that he can finish the entire package before his final exam."
"Today the student and I started to review some general pre-algebra concepts that she learned in school last year. We went over order of operations and how to use this to solve equations. The student's biggest challenge seems to be whether a sum is positive or negative. Next session we will continue to go over these types of questions, and with practice, she will be able to tackle these types of questions more easily."
"This was our last session before the student's math exam. We reviewed radicals and exponents. I also learned that the student not only received an award in algebra, but also her GPA rose from a 2.7 to about a 3.0 during the time I was meeting with her."
"Tutor helped student finish a project for his AP Calculus test. The project asked the student to compare the distance he traveled to a location using the odometer and data collected from mathematical formulas. Tutor helped student arrive at specific steps until student felt that he could take care of the rest on his own."
