Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"With six total sessions, I'm aiming for three SAT sessions and three ACT. For the SAT, I want to emphasize one subject per session, though there will be some overlap as we review home practice from the previous session. I analyzed her math score report and found that the two weakest areas are Algebra and Functions and Geometry and Measurement, so we powered as quickly as possible through the core concepts of each area and did practice problems based on those concepts. I also assigned her a hefty amount of home practice to supplement what we worked on. She needs to do a lot of home practice to achieve the kind of score increases she's aiming for. Next time I'm going to divide the time between math and critical reading, since the amount of instructional time needed for critical reading is relatively low. I'm going to make sure I tackle all of the SAT before I refer her to another tutor and teach her as much as possible about how to lend SAT skills to ACT prep. I explained all this to her, and she did not object. Our goal together is to get at least one whole test covered."
"During today's session, the student and I reviewed the vocabulary work I left her with last time. Overall, she did well with the sentence completion exercises. I think her performance and comfort level could be even better by building her vocabulary, which we'll continue to do during the rest of our sessions. She and I also started working on passage-based reading questions. After discussing what to expect from these questions and some strategies for answering them, we worked through 30 questions. She answered all of the 30 questions correctly! This is an amazing start and I'm confident she will only improve further from here. Before we meet again, I've asked her to complete more vocab exercises and three critical reading sections. This should give us a rough idea of her current critical reading score and help us decide how much more time we need to dedicate to the reading section before we move into writing and math."
"We reviewed SAT math content as well as grammatical rules in the writing section. The student continues to fare well, and continued practice will allow her to master nearly all question types."
