"After covering administrative concerns (introductions, how the sessions would work, etc.), the student and I mainly focused on her approach to the test. Although she is obviously a good student, she can benefit greatly from learning strategies in tackling questions on a standardized test. Therefore, we worked on developing those strategies by working through some sample Critical Reading questions, primarily sentence completion and short passages. We worked on some basic steps, such as eliminating answer choices and reviewing the questions prior to reading the paragraph. These strategies appeared to help, although their long-term viability has yet to be determined. In the end, I gave her some practice passages to work on as well as root stems to study. The student's main difficulty in sentence completion is unfamiliarity with vocabulary. Therefore, we worked on eliminating answer choices, examining the stems/roots of words, and building vocabulary in general. Her vocabulary is not as bad as she believes, but she seems afraid to make educated guesses. Hopefully, more practice and encouragement will build her confidence. With respect to short passages, she mainly needs to learn strategies for approaching a paragraph. We tried out several (although it is unclear which are working yet), but I think she just needs practice. Finally, in the next session, we plan to continue with long passages. Both she and her mother seem very concerned about long passages, so I think it's best to start working on it as soon as possible."
"The student and I worked on Critical Reading sections, paying special attention to problems she missed. I then reviewed one of her essays for the Common Application."
"We first went over homework that I had assigned to the student. He got about two-thirds correct and is showing definite improvement in all areas of the test. This includes in the writing section where his most recent essay was a solid four out of six. We also did some practice sections, in which I gave him a little extra time to keep him relaxed. I also went over his new calculator with him. I showed him how to graph with the calculator and how the calculator can make the test much easier and faster."
"We covered mainly math. The student should spend plenty of time reading and learning vocab. He should also take a practice test or at least isolated sections. I also told him to complete an essay."
"We worked through Parts of Practice Test 3 -- Sections 2, 4, and 7, and reviewed this material, up to the passages in Section 7."
"Fleshed out outline into a complete 43-line essay. Worked on cause and effect, four-paragraph essay structure, and selecting examples."
"We worked on math section fundamentals and strategies. The student is getting a lot better at approaching confusing SAT math problems."
"Went over a study plan for the student to use for the beginning of the school year. Reviewed her scores from the June SAT."
