"We went over kinematics problems this day. The problems were dealing with tension forces and force equations. A lot of the problems were dealing with applying concepts. The student had trouble at first attempting to apply trig problems as well as separating components. He was able to understand relatively quickly and there were no issues. I suggested that he do some review and more practice problems."
"The student has begun Optics/Electromagnetism. We worked on the topics of lenses (images, reflections, refraction, magnifications) as well as electricity (voltage/current/resistance, power, transformers). She practiced by completing a number of worksheets assigned to her."
"Today we worked through his review and another worksheet in preparation for his exam tomorrow. I made him an equation sheet that ought to be similar to the one he will see on his exam tomorrow. Using our problem solving method (list the knowns, ask what are we looking for, and then find an equation that relates the two), the student was able to solve all of the problems on his review worksheet and his other worksheet. We are starting to work on solving problems using only symbols first and then plugging in the numbers at the very end."
"We discussed 2D kinematics and briefly Newton's second law. The student has a great attitude and understands how to use the formulas. We discussed creating a general problem solving structure and breaking the problem into smaller pieces."
"Covered wave mechanics, Doppler effect, sound intensity, frequency, and wavelength. The student hardly needed my help this session; he got every single answer correct."
"The student did well this session; we worked on her take home test on energy conservation. While she does take a while to internalize certain concepts, when she does take that time I believe that she gets a better sense of exactly what is going on in the problem."
"We reviewed a recent recitation homework assignment and discussed the questions to make sure the student understood the concepts and problem solving techniques involved. We discussed some of the basics of ray optics, and she worked through an online homework assignment as we talked through each problem."
"It has been a while since we've been able to meet. We went over most of the lecture notes since before spring break. We went over the Biot-Savart law, Ampere's law, and worked with interacting currents and magnetic fields."
"Today we finished reviewing the homework in preparation for tomorrow's quiz on magnetism. The student showed a much better mastery of the material as opposed to yesterday. The first three questions regarded the right hand rule and magnitude of magnetic force. The 2nd part of the homework tested his understanding of the cyclotron problem. I expect him to do well tomorrow."
"We went through her notes on electric charge, Coulomb's law, and electric field. We went through specific examples of calculating the electric force, and electric field using Coulomb's law and using the equation for electric field. We spent a lot of time using the superposition principle to determine the electric field caused by two point sources."
"Tonight we worked on finding the acceleration of an unbalanced system. We focused primarily on using Newton's second law do determine the acceleration for a system that has a net force not equal to zero. We really focused in on friction and using the coefficient of kinetic friction to solve for the frictional force. The student did and awesome job tonight. By the end of our session she was able to answer questions independently and with confidence. She also shared that her physics grade last quarter was the highest it has been!"
"In this session we went over the student's test. She received a higher grade in this test than her last. From this test, it is clear that she is great at applying the knowledge she has to problems she has done before or those similar to what she has done. In the sessions moving forward, we are going to focus on how to use her skills to solve new problems. Her attitude towards the material and this test was much better than we started meeting."
