Tutoring review by Brent in McCordsville, IN
Tonight, the student and I went back over the skills and concepts that were assessed on his last test (sections 7.1-7.3 on writing and solving one-step equations). His teacher provided a set of 18 review problems to practice these skills; his successful completion of them would retroactively boost his test grade up. So, we made sure he completed these tonight, and that he had solved them correctly. But thankfully, we had additional time to look at bigger-picture, long-term goals as well. I was able to diagnose several "shortcuts" and misconceived perspectives in his conceptualization of Algebra topics. These are tricks and methods that have served him well at times but ones that are not true, and therefore do not work on many problems. For instance, he testified repeatedly to the idea that, in solving for a variable in an equation, one must get rid of the *lowest*/smallest number first (whether by addition or subtraction). This, of course, does not always work. It may have been a pattern that he noticed in all the practice problems he was given for a certain topic when he was first learning to solve these problems. Unfortunately, it must have consistently "worked out" correctly, enough times that he had established this deeply-ingrained "rule" in his head. This needs an overhaul. I went back to the basics with him to re-establish his conceptualization of how equations work, and how we can isolate a variable on one side of an equation. I did this using several examples, some of which were demonstrated kinesthetically (for example, with the decorative twig balls at the dining table), to show how we determine which steps to take to isolate a variable. Similarly, he wanted to subtract (rather than add) to get rid of a number that was subtracted from a variable; we went back to the basic understanding of what subtraction means ("take away") and how we would undo "taking away" by adding back the number that was subtracted. He is a bright young man, though he has formed some habits that have been left unchecked for long enough that it will take time to retrain his automatic responses to various sorts of problems. I think that, if we keep at it, he will quickly adopt an accurate view of algebra concepts and methods. He has showed that he is quick on the uptake once he has been shown 1) that his method will not work in all cases, and 2) that the new way makes more "sense."

Today the student and I used an online platform to help him prepare for his math final. We went over radical and rational expressions. I think the student got a much greater understanding of the concepts because of our session and I definitely feel it will be helpful to him as he takes his test. If he has any other questions, he can feel free to contact me by text or call.

Tutoring review by Ahmad in McCordsville, IN
We covered the unit circle today. More specifically, we covered angles and their sine and cosine values. I drew the whole circle and explained that the radius is one, since it is called the unit circle. We learned how to find angles on the circle before finding the trigonometric values. We focused on relating the various angles to the angles in the first quadrant, and then changing signs of the trigonometric values, depending on what quadrant the angle was in. The student was eager to learn the material. I asked him to memorize the trigonometric values of angles in the first quadrant.

Math: reviewed materials from the previous tutor, worked on practice problems, reviewed concepts in the remainder of the study guide and completed the problems. The student did great and required minor cueing/ help with the concepts! English: worked on practice sentences for grammar, discussed vacation and wrote an essay on it, and worked on grammar errors.

Tutoring review by Leora-Dona in McCordsville, IN
During my first session with the student, we were able to review class information for math, science, and social studies. We worked on the problems he had to prepare for his upcoming math test. He seems to have a pretty good understanding of the information that he will be tested on. He was able to define various science terms that were included in his notes. He also shared with me what he remembered from the social studies lesson about Spanish conquistadors in Texas.

We first started with algebra focusing on factoring. Then we switched to physics where I covered centripetal acceleration and centripetal force. The student's attitude was fine; he seemed interested in understanding physics. The strategies I included was drawing the problem and thinking in extremes (what happens if a variable is small vs big). He was able to understand the rotational concepts pretty well and apply the equations to solving problems.
