Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student's quiz had not happened yet, so we used this session to solidify his knowledge of the simple past tense in comparison with the imperfect past tense. We went over some exercises he had done previously and focused on recurring errors. One mistake he commonly made was forgetting the past participle of verbs that are a form of "prendre" or "mettre." Together we made a list of these verbs and included the past participles so that he could study and reference that before the quiz. We also went over verbs that use "etre" when conjugating in the past. I had him make a list, and when he couldn't think of one, I would use the other verbs in the list as references or give him a simile in French. We also went over a list of keywords and situations that indicate when to use which tense. The session consisted mainly of review, but we focused on the areas where he had some trouble. When we did some review activities, I would always ask him why he chose to use a particular tense. His response would rely upon either a keyword or a situation, which shows that he's understanding the purpose of each tense and that he's effectively using context clues. He seemed ready to take on the quiz! I left him with a bit of homework: to look over all the irregular "v" verbs that we went over last Saturday and make flashcards. I advised him to write the verb on one side and draw a picture that acts out the verb on the other. He seems like a visual learner, so I'm hoping this will help him distinguish between verbs like "voir" and "vouloir," which look very similar but mean completely different things."
"Today, we prepared for a project/ oral presentation the student is giving next Monday. She had to make a commercial spot for a city and include information about the city, things to do, and reasons people should visit. First, I helped her edit her rough draft written version. Then she practiced delivering it and I gave her pointers on pronunciation. At the end she had time to do a listening activity. I had her listen to a song in French and put the lyrics in the correct order based on what she heard."
"We continued going over stem-changing -er verbs in the present tense with some written activities to practice conjugation and meaning. We also went over pronunciation of the vowel "u" and practiced with some example words. The student doubted her answers at times but only made occasional small errors. We also went over contractions of the prepositions "a" and "de" when followed by definite articles "le" and "les". On the explanation sheet there was a small practice section that I asked the student to complete. I also asked her to continue the verb conjugation written practice that was assigned last time. We are wrapping up with the present tense and therefore will have reviewed the main topics that are necessary to understand in order for the student to start the first lesson in the online course (reflexive verbs)."
