Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Covered: Test corrections on properties of exponents, graphing radical/exponential equations, and extraneous solutions. Also touched on logarithms and how to use inverse properties to simplify expressions. He didn't do as well as he thought (47%), but there were some questions that he got partially correct, but I wanted him to talk to his teacher about. Extraneous solutions: using factoring instead of isolating (x+1)^2 and solving."
"We started by reviewing the student's quiz and worked through the problems. Then, we worked on graphing quadratic functions using completing square method. He is going to go over the examples that we worked on today to practice more. He seemed very focused and willing to learn."
"I worked with Student A on geometry and tried to get a feel for exactly where he is. He left his books at school, so we were only able to go over several geometry questions, regarding area and perimeters in triangles. In our next meeting, he will have his books, so he will be able to show me specific examples of what he is stuck on. I also met with Student B. We started going over equations and inequalities. He is picking it up very quickly and only needs to learn new concepts."
"The student started work in Unit 13 -- Positive and Negative Numbers -- in the K12 online course. Lesson 1 Foundations presented "opposite" numbers contrasted with "reciprocals." The student was able to discern these after some practice. He reviewed finding points on the number line which he has mastered since beginning the course. The term "integer" was defined -- whole numbers and zero, no fractions. Then he considered fractions and decimals ("parts") on the number line. The student also understands that absolute value is positive and is the distance from zero. Lesson 1 Skills Update and Checkpoint quizzes showed 100% correct answers. Lesson 2 Adding and Subtracting Signed numbers was relatively troublesome, where the student needed lots of support to understand the rules. One rule is "minus times minus equals plus" and how to "add negative" or subtract. The student thought of himself walking on the number line and referred to written extra examples. Lesson 2 Skills Update yielded 100% score where the student independently named an obtuse angle, found missing angle measure in a triangle, and found the perimeter of a regular polygon. The Skills Update quiz was also 100% correct answers. Lesson 3 Net Gains and Losses took signed numbers into the real world and was easier for the student to grasp. He scored 100% on both quizzes, showing mastery of finding circumference of a circle, finding probability as a fraction, choosing which event is dependent, and predicting outcomes for tossing two coins. The student chose to skip Lesson 4 which was optional. Lesson 5 Multiplying Signed Numbers was started with a Skills Update score of 100% for finding probabilities for sets of marbles, dice and reducing the fractions to simplest terms. The student is showing remarkable understanding of concepts and how they connect. He remains upbeat and confident throughout the session."
"Today we went over applications of integration to volume, surface area, and work. The student is eager to learn. The student was struggling with finding volumes of regions of revolution the most. I cleared up his misunderstandings and he is much more comfortable with the concept now."
"He is a very bright student, but he still tries to finish problems too quickly. We worked on slowing down and fully reading the problem and understanding the question before trying to come up with a solution."
