"The student told me that he received a low B on his previous math test. I was extremely happy to hear this because it was a big improvement from tests in the past. He is grasping the concept that we are currently working on and I am excited to see how he finishes the semester."
"On Wednesday we covered coordinate distances. We reviewed a past homework that involved plotting coordinates and their X-axis/Y-axis reflections. The student did well. He maintained a positive attitude throughout the session. In terms of strategies or study skills, I let him know to be careful about plotting points, make sure he includes parentheses in his answers, pay attention to which axis he's reflecting over, and pay attention to the units along the graph (they're not always 1; sometimes they're 5 or 10). I left him with a sample graph for extra practice where he had to plot points and make reflections. Wins during the whole session since he fixed the mistakes he made on prior work sheets."
"We honed in on solving exponential and logarithmic equations. I think showing him the three different patterns of solving these types of equations helped him solve them across the board."
"We worked on polar coordinates today. The student had done some significant work on memorizing the unit circle in the last week, so things were running much more smoothly. When I showed him that polar coordinates were the same thing as vectors, we was having a much better time. We made it through much of the rest of the chapter together."
"The student and I worked on sample problems in preparation for her upcoming exam. We specifically focused on trig identities, as they will form a large part of her exam. She knows this material well and is not intimidated by some of the harder-looking problems!"
"The student and I spent our session discussing hyperbolas. I began by relating the general equation for a hyperbola to the general equation of an ellipse before showing how the same important pieces of information were used. We walked through how to sketch a hyperbola given the general equation and how to determine which direction the hyperbola was oriented in. We also looked at how to find the distance from center to foci. Then, we spent the rest of the session reviewing homework problems and doing each problem step-by-step."
