Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student was reviewing for an upcoming math quiz. We covered the graphs of rational functions. Although he was struggling at first, he really just needed a little practice with the subject and he was doing well by the end of the session. I just found out during this session that while he doesn't have a book, he does have sections for each lesson posted online. These are an excellent resource, and I would encourage him to use them."
"This was our first session in a couple of weeks and the student came back with great energy. We finished four of the problems we set out to finish for her portfolio and did a little extra. We covered different types of word problems, but mostly ones that worked with the logistic growth model. She has a quiz next week and she said this was exactly what she needed to study for it. Excellent session."
"Today we spent more time on systems of equations. We looked over the student's practice test from last week. We are going to spend the next 11 sessions focusing on different topics, assigning homework about that topic as well as the ones preceding it, and setting a goal of taking at least five practice tests."
"We basically picked up from where we left off last week, which was pretty much concentrating on the topic with which the student would be writing his next quiz on the next day. We covered topics ranging from changing square-root expression into exponential forms or basically simplifying square-root and exponential equation. Based on our last session, I can confidently say that the student is in good shape to write his next quiz."
"Worked with the student on geometry to prepare for his test tomorrow. First, we went over his previous quiz to see why he had gotten a 5/10. I was glad to see that going over it helped him realize what he had done wrong. Then we focused on completing the review sheet for the test that was presented in class. The student definitely wants to learn the material and he is very open to my assistance, which is much appreciated. I went over with him/reminded him about the naming of polygons, properties of parallelograms, different attributes for each type of parallelogram and how sides and angles are related to each other in each of these. The entirety of the test mainly focuses on the congruency factors within each parallelogram type, as well as comprehensive proofs. When pointed in the right direction, the student is capable of solving the math involved in the answer, however, the issue is him needing to point himself in that direction. He seems to understand how and why the problems are solved in a certain way, and when asked to replicate in a similar format, he can. We went over certain things to look for in each concept and hopefully these will carry over to the test tomorrow! He said he felt confident and ready for the test, which is excellent."
"The student worked through some 3-dimensional shape problems. These problems required him to find the surface area and volume for each shape. He has been struggling somewhat with the correlation of units and how they relate to surface area and volume. Once he figures out which equation to use he does well. He was asked to focus on remembering which equation provides squared units and which provides cubed. He is improving and has a test this Friday."
