Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we worked on equations of one variable with multiple occurrences of the variable on both sides. We also worked on demonstrating the steps of solving for equations of one variable. The student understands the concept of reversing arithmetic to solve for a variable but he sometimes makes mistakes in the writing of the problem. We went through some ways to check his problems to help reduce mistakes."
"Yesterday I worked with the student on absolute value equations. She completed her worksheet from class and then I gave her twenty additional problems to help her get extra practice."
"This was my first session with this student, so I had to get a grasp of the concepts that he is comfortable with. He lacks some of the basic skills that he should have learned in 6th and 7th grade, so we had to go back and relearn some of these to make sure he understands them. For example, adding and subtracting negative and positive integers was something I discovered he did not know how to do. Therefore, we spent about 30 minutes going over that. Then we tried solving for x and combining like terms. I saw improvement over the session, but these are concepts we will really have to harp on before we can move on to other material. We will have to work hard practicing with him to make sure he really understands algebra."
"The student had a couple homework sets that she had questions on. She had questions about functions, so I explained how to identify a function from a graph or table of values. She's very good at evaluating functions at specific x values. I showed her a trick to get rid of fractions, since she doesn't like working with them. She also had some graphing problems. She's good at making the table of values, but needs to be careful plotting the points to make sure she keeps the correct sign. She thinks she has a test on Monday, so I'll find out how it went next time. I think she'll do fine as long as she does some review."
"The concepts covered were distributive property in algebra and also simplification of algebraic terms. The student worked on the corrections of his test that he had taken in the day. He was a good student, who worked hard on his corrections. We also covered concepts on opposites of an algebraic term, sum and difference. This was a new unit and he did well in being engaged the whole time."
"The student and I worked on completing the square. We discussed how the quadratic equation could be used to solve these problems, but completing the square can also solve these quadratics. We discussed how it is important for him to get ahead in class."
