Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over a practice test and honed in on factoring and percentage problems. I will be sending him a review sheet."
"The student and I were able to pack in some important writing skills to follow up on her last session. We began with a review of Pride & Prejudice, the book she has chosen to read as she prepares for the reading comprehension portion of the SSAT. The student was able to identify key plot points, characterization details, and diction choices, which are all translatable skills for the SSAT. Once we finished discussing the book, we moved on to a review of the essay outline format for the SSAT. The student is demonstrating a general understanding of the essay outline, but needs to be looking at it more often in her free time and implementing it as much as possible in her writing work. The student and I workshopped the introduction and first body paragraph of an essay using our outline. In the course of our work, she had to rewrite several sentences because she had not adhered to the outline format. This repetition hopefully will make her keen to implement the writing conventions the first time she writes. Once done with these two paragraphs, the student and I talked through good examples to include in an SSAT essay. She has had trouble coming up with substantial enough examples, but I think this is a matter of confidence more than lacking options. By the end of our exercise in devising strong examples for the essay, she was drawing on very complex ideas and applying them to the essay format in a very impressive way. For extra practice this evening, the student will write the next two body paragraphs of the essay we started writing today. Tomorrow we will write the conclusion paragraph together."
"This was my first meeting with the student in about three weeks. I had him do some time trials on SSAT practice problems (verbal and math). He actually did quite well on both."
