Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked mainly on mathematics and the adding and subtracting of numbers with decimals. We also memorized the roots of kilo, deci, etc. and practiced conversion. We then finished reading her social studies novel on Marco Polo and took notes as we read."
"Today the student worked on vocabulary words for language arts and a synonym worksheet using the vocabulary words. He read a short story and answered 10 reading comprehension questions. The student also practiced his times tables and then worked on completing his multiplication flash cards."
"I assisted the student with multiplication by powers of ten and with vocabulary and spelling. He was struggling at first with the multiplication but started understanding it better after I explained how to do these kinds of problems."
"For the first hour, she and I reviewed division, starting with shorter problems and then working our way up to longer problems. She was able to do the longer division problems all by herself by the end. For the second hour we read from her independent reading book for school. We got through the whole first chapter, about 5-10 pages, stopping to talk about the plot every few paragraphs."
"Today, the student brought in his trigonometry homework and corresponding textbooks. We worked together to solve some rather trickily-worded problems about triangle theory and, specifically, the law of sines. The biggest struggle with these was making sure diagrams were drawn correctly, but when we took the time to do so, he was able to solve problems easily."
"The student had a fractions worksheet that his mom requested help on. He was correcting 4 pages he had previously turned in. We used a magnetic fraction board to illustrate wholes and fractions for adding mixed numbers. He also had to convert mixed numbers to improper fractions, so I showed him how to do that using the fraction board as well as showing him how to convert them with numbers. He was able to follow my example. He is always willing to work at the problems, and I think he just needs more practice. I will check with his mom re: upcoming assignments and prepare some simple review sheets / problems to help his confidence."
