Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today I conferred with the student about his goals; He has worked through some test materials and requested that we spend most of our time in that area. We worked through a good portion of a 300-word vocabulary list, and through some Verbal Practice sections 1 and 2 (verbal and language)."
"The student and I reviewed his vocabulary drills that he completed - we need to do a bit of vocab catch up, in terms of both reviewing stems and learning new vocab words. He's really quite bright when it comes to breaking down unfamiliar words to get a reasonable definition. The problem is that this strategy does not always work, and it is also a game of knowing a wide variety of words. Homework for the next session includes checking his last drill, coming up with definitions for his list of new vocab words, and writing sentences for 10 unfamiliar stem words."
"The student and I had a great first session. We went over her answers from the practice test and reviewed those that she got wrong. Overall, she did very well on the test, but we focused heavily on reading comprehension. On the practice test, she mentioned that she ran out of time on this section so I gave her tips that would help her better manage her time. Additionally, we reviewed the vocabulary words as well."
"Today, we focused on vocabulary first and then we went over the problems he got wrong on the homework. Then, we continued with the math concepts in the book. Today we looked at Area, volume of objects, line graphs, bar graphs, and circle graphs. We then looked at tone questions for reading comprehension. I also increased his vocab load to 20 words a day. Also, I added math drills."
"We began by going over a verbal section the student did for homework. I then went over coordinate geometry with her, and gave her some new strategies to approach the problems. We also did some practice geometry problems."
"In today's session, the student and I reviewed his answer choices for the personalized learning plan #1 for the SSAT middle level Math. The primary topics focused upon were plane and coordinate geometry, data and analysis (probability, mean, median, mode, range, data sets, etc.), and Algebra (variables). He is showing progress, and I am following up with practice tests in those areas; they've been emailed out to him to work on. I also emailed to him a personalized learning plan for his verbal section, so he can get more concentrated practice. We'll review his answers from the diagnostic and the learning plan practice during next Thursday's session. Overall, the session went well."
