Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This session we started off two detailed reading passages, focusing on dual passages and timing/pacing. From there, we ended with math. For the next two Saturdays, the student has been assigned a full length practice exam."
"We reviewed math key facts and looked at critical reading problems to discuss test taking strategies. We also reviewed for the writing section by looking at models and talking about strategies for getting the highest score."
"Dived into the critical reading section: we went over strategy for sentence completion (one vs two blanks, contrasting words, generating our own words, etc.) as well as for reading comprehension (literal vs authorial intent; point test). The student became comfortable with deciding easier blanks to go with first on two-blank questions and became quickly familiar with the point test for passage-based questions."
"Today we went over three sections from the SAT assignment the student completed yesterday. Discussed in-depth strategies and approaches to the verbal fill-in-the-blank questions. Went over math section and saw she had trouble with about a third of the questions. Will need to address and review her basic math skills to refresh her memory. Assigned three more sections to be reviewed on Monday. Given that next week is Thanksgiving, decided to hold sessions on Monday and Tuesday instead, as per student's request. Will need to assign her an essay writing assignment to give her practice with writing. The student clearly struggles with the Reading section of the SAT the most out of the three. Lacking in vocabulary. Assigned her a list to help her."
"The student and I worked through the errors she had made on a practice test she took independently, and discussed test-taking strategies for each section at great length. We also discussed an "answer, guess, skip" plan for test day, as well as general test logistics. This was our last tutoring appointment before her SAT. Fingers crossed that she hits her target score of ~1500; I am very hopeful that she will! :)"
"The student and I worked through approximately 50 SAT math questions, with a focus on algebraic expressions, systems of equations, linear versus exponential graphs, probability, and geometry. She did well on the majority of the questions, although we had to work on strategies to solve questions without guess and check or plugging answers in. Our next session is scheduled for tomorrow."
